Gemma Malley's debut won praise for its powerful message and vision of a frightening future that seems all too near. Longevity drugs have made it possible for people to live far beyond normal expectations, and children are now an unnecessary commodity. Anna is a surplus, one of the children whose parents were selfish enough to create her, and who now must suffer penance for their indulgence. But when a new surplus shows up at Anna's compound, Anna is torn between everything she has been taught and everything she hoped might one day come true.

"I absolutely loved this book. It is written half in diary form and the other half by third person narration. It is the future where people no longer die - they take Longetivity pills and live for many lifetimes. The only catch is you cannot have any children. If you do you opt out of the program and you will die. If you do have children they become what is called a Surplus and put in group homes where they must work as servants to pay back the crime of "being born". It is spellbinding from the first page."

— Niria, 2/10/2014" I'm on the fence with this dystopian YA novel. It's not brilliant, but not bad either "
— Anne, 2/8/2014" Pretty fast but good book! "
— Camila12, 1/28/2014" I thought this was a new and different type of dystopian. It's unlike any I have read so far. It was a good book. I feel like a really good book evokes some kind of emotion from the reader and this one definitely did! I was so angry throughout most of this book! The way the adults referred and talked to the children in this book made me so mad! That's not to say it wasn't a good read because it really was. If you read it, I think you would have a better understanding of what I'm talking about. "
— Daneisha, 1/26/2014" Couldn't stop reading. It was amazing. "

— Hope, 12/14/2011" A story about living forever, which oddly we don't have a lot of -- or at least I haven't read much of. It was good, but not special. "
— Sarah, 5/23/2011" I read this book ages ago and have recently been trying to remember what it is so i can find it and re-read it. I can hardly remember any of it, but i do remember thinking it was a good book, which is why i would like to read it again, especially now the other books are out!! "
— Sheree, 5/10/2011" An intriguing beginning. It's easy to get into this one.

Just finished the book and highly recommend it. It is a bit like Fahrenheit 451, but not as sophisticated. It does make you think, while spinning a good dramatic story. "
— Emily, 5/1/2011" I don't know why i never thought of overpopulation being a problem with eternal life. it reminded me a lot of away we go- another book of "surpluses". and i'm so pleased to see a sequel! although it is a very satisfying stand alone book. "
— Caitlinleah, 5/1/2011" This had a great plot. I really enjoyed it. Most of the book was berve recking and you never knew what was going to happen to them. I just recently found the next book, and am starting it tonight. Yay. "
— Jessica, 4/29/2011" This was a quick read in my new favorite genre - dystopian fiction. I will be looking forward to reading the next one. It is definitely one for discussion groups. "
— Miranda, 4/27/2011" It was really really good, but kind of slow at the beginning. All in all, I really liked it. Thanks again, Sara! "
