Publisher Description

A husband, a family, a comfortable life: Theodora Lestrange lives in terror of it all.

With a modest inheritance and the three gowns that comprise her entire wardrobe, Theodora leaves Edinburgh - and a disappointed suitor - far behind. She is bound for Romania, where tales of vampires are still whispered, to visit an old friend and write the book that will bring her true independence.

She arrives at a magnificent, decaying castle in the Carpathians, replete with eccentric inhabitants: the ailing dowager; the troubled steward; her own fearful friend, Cosmina. But all are outstripped in dark glamour by the castle's master, Count Andrei Dragulescu.

Bewildering and bewitching in equal measure, the brooding nobleman ignites Theodora's imagination and awakens passions in her that she can neither deny nor conceal. His allure is superlative, his dominion over the superstitious town, absolute - Theodora may simply be one more person under his sway.

Before her sojourn is ended - or her novel completed - Theodora will have encountered things as strange and terrible as they are seductive. For obsession can prove fatal...and she is in danger of falling prey to more than desire.

"This was not one of Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey mysteries which I love, but I enjoyed this also. It was a vampire type book set in the Carpathian mountains. The character was similar to Julie Grey although not wealthy, but certainly head-strong and talented. an enjoyable read on a winter afternoon."

" Even better than the Lady Julia mysteries! This is so rich in detail, so imaginative, so atmospheric. More than just a vampire tale, it's romantic, mysterious, well-written, and full of history. "

" I'm not a big reader in the vampire sub-genre, but I liked how this book sustained doubt throughout the story about whether or not there was something paranormal going on. The heroine is a well educated Victorian and somewhat interesting but not well rounded enough to really draw you in. The hero is even less well explored. The mystery plot started slow, heated up in the second half, and had a good resolution -- but then the book ends very abruptly, summing up a year (or more?) of the heroine's life in the last five pages. To me, it felt like the author wanted to end the book with the chapter before the last one, and the publisher pressed her into tacking on a different ending. "

" Deals with a young woman's adventure into Romania during the Victorian Era. Listed as an adult/young adult read. One scene with sexual content, but not described in any detail. "

" I would have to give it one and half stars. I really like her Lady Julia series (although, like others I prefer the covers before they went all romance novel), but this one didn't satisfy. It definitely had a Gothic feel but I didn't buy the relationship between the two main characters. Definitely not sold on their instant attraction and resulting "relationship". I can't recommend this one but I will probably still read the next in her Lady Julia series. "

" very enjoyable, and manages to remain believable while handling what is perhaps the least believable of all subjects. takes vampires into a fresh new light while relegating them to a mere piece in the fabric of the story. "

" Another Deanna Raybourn book that I really enjoyed (although not quite as much as the Julia Grey books). The mystery kept me guessing and I was actually quite surprised by the culprit- which is always a sign of a good book for me. "

But, while not everything is explained, there are definitely humans behind some of the mysterious happenings. "
