Ana Rosa is a blossoming young writer growing up in a poor seaside village in the Dominican Republic. At the young age of twelve, she finds herself faced with turning points that will make up who she is—watching her brother's search for a future, learning to dance and to love, and finding out what it means to be a part of a community. But in a country where words are feared, Ana Rosa must struggle to find her own voice and the means for it to be heard. Gradually she learns that her words have the power to transform the world around her—celebrating what is most beautiful on her island and transcending even the most unthinkable of tragedies.

"I love the book, "The color of my words" by Lynn Joseph because Ann Rosa really expresses her feelings in this book. And that's good. And she writes about everything that's happening. And she feels pain when her brother dies because he was protecting her from the man that wanted to take her down from the tree she was in. Some people say it's Ann Rosa's fault that her brother died but me..I can't decide if it's her fault of not. This book is a good book and i recommend this book to every one who has a heart for poems or not."

— Samuel, 2/15/2014" Loved it!! Very vivid with the descriptions and scenery. Honestly, the longer I read it, the more I felt I was sweating in really humid air. The story was so sweet, real and touching without being sentimental. "
— Shauna, 2/1/2014" I really liked the book. It was a very nice book. I would read it if I were you. Trust me. One of the best. "
— Brandon, 1/31/2014" This book pairs nicely with books presenting themes of oppression by dictatorship or police-state governments (The Composition, Before we were free (Alvarez), Surrender tree (Engle), etc. "
— Ruth, 1/16/2014" Lovely story of a young writer in the Dominican Republic during a time when words can be dangerous. Although this is hinted at in the story, the danger doesn't come until near the end. The book is an easy read and full of beautiful descriptions and analogies. Could be a read aloud. The climax could spark some interesting debate. "

— Stacey, 11/8/2013" Its a good book to read for people the ages 10-13 because it is about a girl who wants to express her feelings on books but she can't, there family isn't the richest and it is sentimental. If you want to know more you have to read the book! "

— Claritza, 10/20/2013" The words in this story are very poetic, and provide entertainment for those readers that wish to dive more deeply into books. The story itself is easy to understand, but older readers will see more than younger readers. This makes this book wonderful for a wide variety of ages. "
— Megan, 10/20/2013" I liked this book, but I couldn't quite reconcile the voice of the narrator with a real person, as opposed to the author's projection of a person. "
— Stuart, 8/6/2013" A sweet, feel-good novel but also with some depth- I loved how hard the little girl worked to find anything to write on. I liked the perspective of some of the adults issues through the eyes of a child. "
— TheLibraryOfSarah, 8/5/2013" The author is married to a Dominican and spent lots of time in Sosua, the setting of the book. An easy read for teen in a setting close to my heart. "
