"In the interests of full disclosure, I admit that Carol O'Connell's Mallory books are far and away my favorite mystery series. But there's a danger in growing to love a particular cast of characters: with each new book, I fear, "Can she do it? Can she write another first-rate Mallory book, as complex and rewarding as the last?" I was especially nervous after her non-Mallory hiatus with Bone by Bone , but I should have known better. O'Connell NEVER disappoints. If anything, her books keep getting better, because her characters are not the recycled caricatures that plague most series books. They grow. They fail. They struggle. We learn more, yet never too much--and never enough. If you've never read a Carol O'Connell book, do NOT start with this one. Treat yourself, and go back to the beginning (Mallory's Oracle), and read every one of them. THEN read this one. You will NOT be disappointed."

" I've read the whole Mallory series ... she's one of my favorite detectives. This was a great one, can't wait for another. "

" Everytime there was a behind the scenes deal between Riker and the other police, or Mallory and one of her dad's friends, I really never had any idea what had happened. Completely befuddled. In defense of the author, I didn't really try all that hard to figure it out ... but then again, the author should have made me care. I found myself just rolling my eyes. The treatment of bullying and adult complicity was really well done I thought. I very much liked Riker - Mallory, I never really understood. And who dunnit was pretty implausible to me considering the way they had been portrayed .... Overall, meh. "

" This was a good ole fashioned murder mystery with murders so outrageously done, I had to keep reading. "

" Not my favorite of the Mallory series. I found some of the "evil" characters simply too cruel to be believable. I've been with the Mallory series from the start, before ever hearing about Stieg Larsson's characters to which they are currently being likened. Still a compelling read, better than most best selling mysteries. "

" I highly recommend Carol O'Connell. This book was no exception. I love her writing style and she keeps me guessing until the very end. "

" Okay, I am giving O'Connell a 3 against her other works; she is still a favorite mystery writer of mine and would probably be a 4 against others. I just feel that O'Connell started out strong -- a master of creating and slowly unwrapping complex, interesting characters. Writing psychological thrillers that make things lurk in the darkness of your mind. But once her books took off I felt like she is being pressured to quickly produce more of her heroine Mallory and there is less crafting and more packaging. This book seems to try to cash in on the popularity of the CSI formula, giving much more blood and guts and rats and insects and details of things I don't want to know. It distracts from the story and is a bit of a cheap shortcut. I also found the plot and all the characters got too convoluted until by the end you were losing track, and somewhat didn't care, exactly who dunnit. "

" This book is so choppy, the characters are not brought to full completion, you never get in the head of the lead character if that is what you want to call her. I am mad that I paid $12 for this book. The reviews looked good but it stunk! "

" I found this to be one of the best of the series and considering the quality of all of the books, it is high praise. I admit to having a soft spot for Mallory, and this book only adds to her oeuvre. Politics, blackmail, madness, and devious cruelty; and the love of a little girl. "

" This book has everything you could want in a murder/suspense mystery. A good mix of cold cases connected with present day crime and Kathy Mallory using her skills to pull it altogether. Carol O'Connell is one of my favorite authors and Mallory one of my most favorite characters. "

" A welcome return of Kathy Mallory from NYPD's Special Crimes Unit, who was labelled dangerously unstable by the department's psychiatrist. An unusual child witnesses a grisly murder and Mallory uncovers the link to a 15-year-old crime done to another child in Central Park. Compelling and dark. "
