1795, and a young woman travels from Cambridge to the Suffolk coast. Her name is Mary Finch, and she has been invited to meet her wealthy uncle - and so end a family estrangement that has held fast for more than twenty years. Smart, courageous and blessed with good looks if not good fortune, Mary is excited by the prospect of adventure, and the chance to escape a miserable future teaching at Mrs Bunbury's school for young ladies.

But a whispered warning from a man dying on the road, who carries a strangely familiar watch bearing her uncle's initials, exposes her to a ruthless conspiracy that threatens not only her family's reputation, but her very life...

"I adored this novel. Mary is so fresh faced, smart, and endearing. Her enthusiasm for a little adventure was thoroughly entertaining. The mystery itself was interesting, but I was fairly confident in the outcome. If you enjoyed a Poisoned Season series, this will certainly appeal to you. "

" Fun, reasonably well written Regency mystery, albeit a bit predictable. Her first book and she took a lot of care with it. I'll try another one as it was light and engrossing enough to be distracting. "

" Pretty long-winded historical. Ostensibly mystery, but really more spy story. It didn't really make much lasting of an impression, though I enjoyed it as I was reading it, and only occasionally felt the heroine to be too dumb or too idealized. "

" This was fun -- historical fiction from a time period I don't usually read. The author is a legal historian, and it shows a little. It's smoothly plotted and law plays a key role. All of that is very entertaining. But the social history side of things gets a bit of short shrift. "

" This book, and its successor (Counterfeit Guest), hit just the right notes to satisfy my inner Catherine Morland. "
