Publisher Description

In his teens, Jim Carroll roamed the streets of New York, shooting baskets with some of New York's best playground stars, and shooting heroin with some of the city's most memorable street characters. The Basketball Diaries is his chronicle of those years. Written while in his teens, it is a literary tour-de-force and a stunning portrait of contemporary urban street life. The characters and incidents are moving and funny and sad, but always very real.

"This is an amazing book! The first 100 pages are better than the last but the ending sentence totally makes up for it. "I just want to be pure...". I've got to admit I started crying. "Forced Entries: The Downtown Diaries" ORDERED. I can officially say, Jim Carroll is my writing inspiration."

" This book was ok.. I use to like it a ton, but I was weird than! This book is very depressing, though it is based on a true story but its just the same thing over and over and over again. I would recommend this to people who hate swearing and crude stuff, but if you're in the mood to read something from the real world, good luck! "

" A completely screwed up look into Jim Carroll's adolecescence. It was hard not to like this book, a street smart kid growing up in NY during the 60's fall's under the hook of heroin yet still has dreams and aspirations of poetry and basketball. Honest, ugly, and at times funny as hell. "

" As weird as it might sound, I read this while I was in high school and it seemed like a window into what boys were like. I wasn't hanging around this exact type of boy at the time but it seemed like a view into the unknown nonetheless. I also recommend the movie a lot. "
