Publisher Description

Little is known about the origin of The Basket of Flowers, except that it is translated from the French by someone known only as J.H. St. A. The value of this excellent volume lies in its content, which is thoroughly God-honoring and scriptural.

The story centers on a gardener named James and his young daughter Mary. Their simple, joyful life is interrupted when Mary is accused of theft. During the trial, Mary maintains her innocence and tells the truth, in spite of great pressure. But Mary and her father are convicted as thief and accomplice and begin their sentence for the crime. Throughout their sentence, James encourages Mary with lessons from nature about the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and continues to prepare her for what is to come.

The constant demeanor and unchanging attitude of the characters in this little book is a source of substantial encouragement to modern listeners.

"It is a book full of lessons. In it are upheld the moral standards that are despised in our present world. James raises his family(Mary) in the fear of God, making her see God's beauty and greatness in everything around her. Mary's filial peity, humility, truthfulness, hopeful resignation and prayerfulness touches me as a youth. I've read this book since I was a little child(over 14 years now) sometimes several times a day, yet each time I read it, I shed tears as if I'm reading it for the first time and I make strong resolutions to the kind of girl I want to be. I recommend this book to families, friends... everyone."

" I first got this book when I was eight years old. It is one of my favorite childhood books. I recommend it to all young children who can read. A great story of a man who lost his wife and was left to take care of his daughter. Very clear on the gospel of Jesus Christ. "

" Great book. Very inspiring. Be sure to read a copy that has the entire ending. I understand there are two versions. The public requested the author give a more difinitive ending and so a more detailed ending was created after the first publishing. We purchased the one without a "complete" ending and felt so incomplete at the end. "

" I remember reading this book when I was 11, and was really overwhelmed by moral of the story- that truth, honesty and integrity are not negotiable, neither are they situational. Deep life lessons learnt from then. Recommended reading for all. "
