"Welcome to Robert Ludlum's world...fast pacing, tight plotting, international intrigue." —Cleveland Plain Dealer
On Parrish Island, a restricted island off the coast of Virginia, there is a little known and never visited psychiatric facility. There, far from prying eyes, the government stores former intelligence employees whose psychiatric state make them a danger to their own government, people whose ramblings might endanger ongoing operations or prove dangerously inconvenient.
One of these employees, former Consular Operations agent Hal Ambler, is kept heavily medicated and closely watched. But there's one difference between Hal and the other patients—Hal isn't crazy. With the help of a sympathetic nurse, Hal manages to first clear his mind of the drug-induced haze and then pulls off a daring escape. Free, he's out to discover who stashed him there and why—but the world he returns to isn't the one he remembers. Friends and longtime associates don't remember him, there are no official records of Hal Ambler, and when he first sees himself in the mirror, the face that looks back at him is not the one he knows as his own.

"An excellent book. Somewhat reminiscent of the Borne series, however I preferred this story line. It is a fun read and keeps you interested in the quirky characters that appear throughout. It built well upon the plot and nicely achieved a balance between predictability and credibility."
— Brian (4 out of 5 stars)
The pace is fast, the dialogue true to character. This one will rivet your attention from beginning to end.
— AudioFile on The Altman Code" At first I really liked the book, but then there were too many questiongs that seemed to get in the way of me enjoying the plot. And by the time they tied it up I felt the ending was really rushed and not as fulfilling as it could have been. Not my favorite by him. "
— Terri, 2/19/2014" My first book about spies, secret intelligence groups etc. Weird to say the least, not at all like James Bond but it could be the author's way of writing, flitting from one scenario to another confusing the heck out of any reader regardless how avid....not a bad read but I'll not be moved to buy anymore books by this author. "
— Rhonda, 2/16/2014" Not my usual genre, but the idea of someone escaping from a psychiatric facility and not looking like himself and having his identity erased was interesting to me. It was a slow read though. I wanted to find out what happened in the end (I did like the twist at the end, and I was surprised by it) but so many times I had to force myself to keep reading because it just got so long so often. "
— Sheila, 2/16/2014" well, when you are alone in a train and you dont have a thing to do, when the tt checked you for smoking and you feel lousy.... and suddenly if you find the book on your seat, do read it then... o/w its best if you left it unread. nothing special or new :( "
— kranti, 2/6/2014" What happens to agents once they've done thier tour of duty and no longer have use by the government? This book sets out to answer that question. Instead of a cozy retirement on a tropical island and a gold watch Hal Ambler is fighting for his life and sanity. Makes you wonder. "
— Tialisa, 1/27/2014" It has been a long time since I have read a Ludlum book. My memory is not good enough to make a comparison to his other books. This had a good plot with lots of suspense. There were only a few unbelievable points. The characters were pretty shallow, typical for a thriller. One, the CIA auditor, was a lot of fun. "
— itpdx, 1/19/2014" Step up from a Patterson novel but a good read to just give your brain a break. Also a bit to predicable for me and the ending was a bit blah. "
— Gloria, 1/15/2014" classic ludlum. entertaining story with lots of technical jargon and detail. "
— Erinn, 1/13/2014" A very entertaining story with a good finish. A little soppy at times but I'm not one for romance. I suppose the author wanted to the book to appeal to women as well. Would definitely recommend as a book to read. "
— Sean, 12/18/2013" Have always been a huge fan of Ludlum. Thought I'd finish some pending books and revisit some already read ones. He's brilliant! "
— Rohan, 12/18/2013" Character's trait - detecting truth. Lover's trait - hiding it... "
— Carrie, 12/5/2013" There are very few books I've started and couldn't finish, but this is one. Maybe I should try again ? "
— Stacie, 11/25/2013" Not really by Robert Ludlum. He died. Very '24' like "
— Mainrun, 11/5/2013" A superb espionage-thriller novel by master of this craft Ludlum. A highly trained operative who posses a particular gift of analyzing people by their faces even for just a fraction of second watch. "
— Ambar, 10/14/2013" A main point of the story was either predictable or I just figured it out/suspected it so early that it made the book less enjoyable than it should've been. "
— Ed, 7/24/2013" An addicting, suspenseful thriller! "
— Jenn, 7/21/2013" THRILLINGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! "
— Ouko Clinton, 10/9/2012" Excellent read. Lots of twists and turns. Good ending with an unlikely friendship. "
— Michelle, 7/24/2012" So far so good. This is my first Rober Ludlum book. "
— Tlwikre, 4/11/2012" Super page-turner. Cotton candy read. Really fun, but no substance. But that's fine! I loved it! It made me feel like a spy. "
— Zak, 1/30/2012" I thought the book was exiting with a great ending. "
— Dale, 11/5/2011" I really enjoyed the ending as I did'nt see it coming. Sad to hear that this will be his last novel. "
— Gary, 10/21/2011" While enjoyable , some parts where hard to get through. Guessed the ending , long before the end "
— Deborah, 8/14/2011" First book I've read from Robert Ludlum. The ending had a nice twist. "
— Kathy, 5/19/2011" Very much like the Bourne series. But I enjoyed this one, just couldn't put it down. Very engaging thriller. "
— Christina, 5/12/2011" This Ludlum book is similar to the Bourne Identity series. Fun to read. "
— Nick, 4/18/2011" I guess I'm a picky reader. This one started out with a fast pace and sucked you right in --- but just didn't keep up with that pace. "
— Tina, 4/1/2011" Not my favorite book. It took me a LONG time to get into this book. I found myself thinking of other things while I was reading it. Honestly - If I was not such a fan of Ludlum's other books I may not have finished it. "
— Ashley, 3/13/2011" ***+ Excellent plot and story. As usual, the pace ebbs and flows sometimes becoming very slow. I figured out the twist about a hundred pages before the end but it was still very good in coming. "
— lunaticprophet, 1/11/2011" Spy thriller, very reminiscent of the Bourne books and movies. Entertaining, wrapped up a bit too quickly with a very pat solution. One must suspend a great deal of disbelief to read this genre anyhow, so it matters little. "
— Barbara, 1/7/2011" Horrible book. Couldn't finish it. Started off interesting enough, but got progressively worse over time. Scary Bad "
— Jeffrey, 12/7/2010" Audiobook well produced. Thrilling but the end waffled on a bit and got very predictable. Very enjoyable nevertheless. "
— Mrsterrapinpond, 11/17/2010" It was a five until the end, I felt disappointed because it was somewhat predictable. Still a read that kept me turning the pages. "
— Ryan, 10/19/2010" Good book and plot very mysterious its the best Ludlum book Ive read so far. "
— Nw, 10/5/2010" Totally amazing, a roller coaster ride from page 1. Enough action, plot twists to ensure that you never keep the book down. "
