As a young child, Lydia and her sister were sent to live with grandparents they'd never even met. It's a cruel and loveless new world for them and it teaches Lydia to grow up fast. She learns to keep secrets and to trust sparingly.

And through it all she suppresses her grief and guilt, believing she is to blame for her mother's death. Now, 28 years later, Lydia is persuaded to leave behind the safe new life she has created in Venice, and return to England to face the past. And maybe her future...

"all respect to erica james! after just over 10 books following very similar styles and "routines", this book is now a gem amongst her writings. it is so completely different, yet maintaining her ability to transport you to a place far from reality. it isn't one of her books that you can curl up in bed with when you need to cheering up, but it will grip. i was on chapter 8 this morning, and now it is finished. you cannot put it down. for those who love a romance with real-life situations weaved into it, this is THE book for you!"

" I have to say that I was pretty skeptical about this book when I picked it up. I thought that it was going to be pretty corny chick lit. I have to say that I was presently surprised. The plot was good it was full of emotion and it was a page turner. I was gripped to find out what happened to Lydia and Noah. However once the main plot of Lydia and Noah growing up it began to slow, due to the amount of explanation that was needed to wind up the story. This was further complicated by adding in the fact that Noah develops a brain tumor. I thought this was a step to far and the novel could have done without it. All in all this was a good read unfortunately the ending didn't really do it justice. I was also pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as corny as I thought. "

" Great story. "The beautiful city of Venice has been Lydia's home for many years, a place where she has found peace and fulfilment. Then one day she glimpses a young man's face in the crowd that threatens to change everything. He's a heart-stopping reminder of a dreadful secret she believed she had banished to the past ...As a young child, Lydia and her sister were sent to live with grandparents they'd never even met before." " This novel is about a girl and a boy who have horrible childhoods. They find each other and develop a friendship. Eventually something happens that parts them, something you'll just have to read and find out about. The writing is funny and smart and of course there is a beautiful love story behind it. I'm a sucker for a love story and this one has an equal measure of pain making it perfectly bittersweet. "

" I have not read any of Erica James before wasn't sure if I would like the 'romantic novel' tag. The story involved you from the outset; I particulary liked the parts of the book set in Venice in fact it has made me want to revisit Venice again. I found the storyline quite predictable at times but neverless it was an enjoyable read. "

" Surprising book, my sister read this and had insisted I read it that it was a great read. I reluctantly agreed, normally romance books aren't my cup of tea. I say surprising as it wasn't all mushy and romantic like I had anticipated. If you romance with a bit of a dark twist to it, than this is the book for you. "

" Blaise Pascal's saying "men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction," sums up the main tone of this book. I was hoping there would be some light and luckily lovely Noah came into it. "

" I am a big Erica James fan but I really didn't enjoy this book. It felt oppresive and miserable and there were plot holes that kept taking me out of the story. I prefer her earlier books which had humour and realism and warmth. This was too close to misery lit for me. "

" Lydia and Noah seemed so real to me. I felt the poignance of Lydia's troubled past. I i felt the escalation of the story when Noah finally came in and pour romance to the hard life of Lydia. I felt thrilled when the murder case came in. The 'reunion' shackled me in the story. "
