In the thickest part of the night, a surging thunderstorm beats down on a Florida cracker home. The rain falls relentlessly, and the sky flashes with blinding brilliance, illuminating swirling leaves, twigs, and dirt. Unseen funnel clouds rotate menacingly, further reducing the almost non-existent visibility and blanketing an evil feeling over the region. Back in a corner of this rural area, the full-grown trees that surround a three-bedroom house strain at their trunks, some bending, some cracking. The wind is deafening. As the hurricane intensifies, the pines and oaks are the first to go.
