Detective Michael Bennett is about to take on the most sinister challenge of his career. The nation has fallen into mourning after the unexpected death of a beloved former first lady, and the most powerful people in the world gather in New York for her funeral. Then the inconceivable occurs. Billionaires, politicians, and superstars of every kind are suddenly trapped within one man’s brilliant and ruthless scenario. Bennett—father of ten—is pulled into the fray. As the danger escalates, Michael is hit with devastating news. After fighting for many years, his wife has succumbed to a terrible disease. As New York descends into chaos, he has lost the great love of his life and faces raising his ten devastated children alone—and rescuing 34 hostages. Day after day, Bennett confronts the most ruthless man he has ever dealt with, a man who kills without hesitation and counters everything the NYPD and FBI throw at him with impunity. As the entire world watches and the tension boils to a searing heat, Bennett has to find a way out—or face responsibility for the greatest debacle in history

" The book was engaging and suspenseful but also shallow and unbelievable. "

" Apart from some uncomfortable languag, I really liked this book. The relationship between Detective Bennett and his wife, Maive, is heart warming, as well as heart breaking. On top of that, he reminds me of Bruce Willis' Detective John McLane in the Die Hard movies...can't complain there. I've always been a HUGE fan of police drama's, and this one falls right in with some of my favs. "

    " Good book...page turner...but ending was a little rushed & unsatisfying. "

" Typical James Patterson. Different people but you will recognize the style immediately. Good plot and quick to read. "

" Just so-so. The hostage situation had lots of potential, but didn't play out as well as it should have. All the stuff about his wife dying, ten kids, etc. really caused a lot of the momentum to be lost. To use a cliche: It took the wind out of the sails. "

" Very good, kept me guessing til the end, couldn't figure how everything had taken place. Well worth it, however it did have another back story which I still dont understand its relevance. Kind of a sad story thrown into action for no apparent reason. But overall it was good, I would recommend it to someone else. "

" It's ok. If you like James Patterson you will probably enjoy this book. However, I didn't. The main character's wife dies and hardley anything is made of it. He has 10 kids and is never home. However, the kids don't have any personality except to show up and say things no kid would ever say. Yet, an elderly women saw me reading this book and said she loved it. To each their own. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Renee | 12/9/2013

" A quick fast reading with very short chapters action thriller for summer easy reading. I can't say that there is anything to be learned from this book but a quicky and absorbing novel on the best selling paperback book list. "

" this book was alright. I think I liked the interactions w/ the main character and his family better than the "suspenseful" part. Some of it was melodramatic but I'm hoping that was on purpose. And the end was a bit predictable. I loved the narrators, especially John Slattery. "

" I think this is the first in a series starring Michael Bennett. He seems to be a likable character. I went back to read this one after I had read "The Cutting Season" featuring Michael Bennett. I didn't realize then it was a series. I like Patterson's books partly because they are such quick reads. "

" This is James Patterson at his best. Not only was I spellbound, but I was shocked when the bad guy's true identity was revealed in Chapter 114. Never saw it coming. As for the 'side' story, if you don't cry during this novel, you don't have a heart. True escapism lit.... "
