"loved it. Very interesting that I read this book that was written in 1998, with everything going on at Penn State. The only issue I had with the book was that there were a lot of characters to keep straight. Read the book in a few sittings, it hooked me and I wanted to figure out the whole puzzle, had to keep myself from reading the last chapter as I sometimes do."

" A little slow to get started and a little rushed at the end but the middle was great! Definitely a fun mystery. "
— Charlotte, 2/12/2014" I will look for more books in the future by Bryan Gruley. This was an interesting story with lots of twists and turns. I got to pulling for Gus and was glad to find that he had some good friends despite his troubles. This book had good believable characters, the kind you want to know. Enjoyable read. "
— Bea, 2/9/2014" I just enjoyed the hell out of this book. It got its hooks into me and wouldnt let go - finished it in a day. - can't wait to read Gruley's second novel. "
— Bill, 2/4/2014" Excellent start to a new series. "
— Vicki, 1/31/2014" The author nails small-town life, but it's definitely the very dark side of that. It may have been a little longer than it needed to be, but it was an excellent portrayal of small town journalism and it had a complex mystery. "
— Leslie, 1/31/2014" Really liked the story. A little too much detail on the hockey games. Probably would have rated this 3 and half stars if option. Would definitely read another book by this author. "
— Wendy, 1/28/2014" Pretty good first mystery. I like the characters and the story. "
— Pamela, 1/26/2014" Yawn. Slow to start, far too much detail about things that don't really add to story, and I saw what was coming a long way off. "
— Jenn, 1/5/2014" I surmised the coach's problem early on, but not the "who done it and why." Hope you like hockey. "
— Peggy, 11/19/2013" Gritty, and not an easy read--but I believed in every minute of it and cared very much what happened. And I want to know the recipe for the pie. . . "
— Kathryn, 11/17/2013" 3.5 stars for me. It was a little slow in the beginning. The second half really picked up and I enjoyed it. "
— Amy, 10/24/2013" A solid first mystery with interesting characters and plot twists. Gruley really captured the small town atmosphere plus the obsession with hockey which shaped or influenced so many lives. I look forward to reading more about Gus Carpenter and the residents of Starvation Lake. "
— Donna, 10/21/2013" Take the northern Michigan setting and throw hockey into the mix and this mystery made for an enjoyable read. "
— Mark, 6/26/2013" Good mystery set in rural Michigan. Unfortunatly due to my line of work, I able to figure out the mystery long before the end. "
— Marla, 4/4/2013" Well-developed story and a great read. It had me tapping my iPad very fast to turn the pages as I eagerly awaited the outcome of the story. "
— Gail, 2/15/2013" (4.5-5.) WOW! I never expected to love it so much! :D "
— KayLee, 11/18/2012" Well written. He captures the way that no one is perfect, but some of us are evil. "
— Mel, 10/18/2012" This story, set in northern Michigan, gets better as it goes along. "
— Marge, 7/23/2012" A mystery.....but a little too much hockey background for me "
— Dottie, 3/17/2012" A good mystery, especially if you're a hockey fan. Kept my interest "
— Carole, 1/1/2012" Very good story about Gus Carpenter, a former hockey player turned journalist who returns to his home town. Gus is now the newspaper editor and investigates the death of his hockey coach. Interesting twists, with some troubling subject matter. "
— Jane, 10/18/2011" I read this book and had high hopes because of feedback from 4MA. I liked it. Good writing and characters and so on. I did figure it out quite early, and some of the delay in finally figuring things out seem heavily manufactured. But, I'll happily read another. "
— Katherine, 6/10/2011" This story, set in northern Michigan, gets better as it goes along. "
— Marge, 6/5/2011" 3.5 stars for me. It was a little slow in the beginning. The second half really picked up and I enjoyed it. "
— Amy, 4/25/2011" I probably would have rated this book a 3, but all the Michigan and hockey references really brought it home for me. "
— Suellen, 4/23/2011" The first in the series. Despite telling me more about hockey - goaltending in particular - than I ever wanted to know. it's a gripping thriller and wonderful treatment of small-town working-class life. "
— Lynn, 4/11/2011" Take the northern Michigan setting and throw hockey into the mix and this mystery made for an enjoyable read. "
— Mark, 4/8/2011" Very good story, hard to keep track of all the characters and nicknames. A must read for hockey lovers! "
