Publisher Description

Belladonna Johnson can see ghosts. It’s a trait she’s inherited from her mother’s side of the family, like blue eyes or straight hair. And it’s a trait she could do without, because what twelve-year-old wants to be caught talking to someone invisible? It is convenient, though, after Belladonna’s parents are killed in a car accident. They can live with her the same as always, watching the same old TV shows in their same old house. Nothing has changed . . . until everything changes. One night, with no warning, they vanish into thin air—along with every other ghost in the world. It’s what some people think ghosts are supposed to do, but Belladonna knows it’s all wrong. They may not be living, but they’re not supposed to be gone. With the help of her classmate Steve, a master of sneaking and spying, Belladonna is left to uncover what’s become of the spirits and to navigate a whole world her parents have kept well-hidden. If she can’t find her way, she’ll lose them again—this time for good.

"Belladonna Johnson is an unusual 12-year-old: she can see and talk to ghosts, like her parents, who died in a car crash, and Mr. Baxter (Dr. Ashe) who owned the laundromat, and Elsie who died on the school's tennis courts. It makes life uncomfortable for her, because she is caught between being rude to ghosts by ignoring them and being thought crazy because it seems that she talks to to herself. However, when all of the ghosts that populate Belladonna's world disappear, she learns how important their presence is. She a classmate, Steve, and Elsie face many dangers in their attempt to find out what is causing the ghosts to disappear and to stop it."

" I love reading a new book and hoping it's a series. A fun read. A great example of why I enjoy young adult/juvenile fantasy so much. Loved the characters. Love the idea of the story. Well written. "

" I read this book when I was eleven and I loved it. It's an excellent book about a girl that can see ghosts and can travel between the two worlds of ghosts and humans. A force most evile is messing things up between the worlds and Belladonna tries to stop it. I can't remember exactly what happend, it was a while ago, but I absolutely loved this book and all my friends agree that it's an excellent read. "

" Where to begin?! I LOVED this book! It was so totally fabulous! I couldn't put it down! The characters were awesome, the plot was exciting and gripping, and I loved every amazing twist =D I HIGHLY recommend this novel, and cannot WAIT to read the sequel! "

" An okay teen book. More amusing than some. Thought it was a stand-alone but, of course, there will be sequels. The heroine wasn't a beautiful waif and the boy is a friend and isn't desparately handsome and they don't lust after each other hopelessly and all that crap. Such a relief. "

" Rowling-esque juvenile lit book about a girl who sees ghosts, and then sees they've all gone missing. It's a page-turner! It remained a page-turner until the end, with the promise of sequels built into the storyline. I loved this book! "
