Publisher Description

When a Russian émigré is found murdered on Hampstead Heath, Smiley is called out of retirement to exorcise some Cold War ghosts from his clandestine past. What follows is Smiley the human being at his most vulnerable and Smiley the case officer at his most brilliant; and it makes to a thrilling conclusion his career-long, serpentine battle with the enigmatic and ruthless Russian spymaster Karla.

Starring the award-winning Simon Russell Beale as Smiley, and with a distinguished cast including Anna Chancellor, Lindsay Duncan, Maggie Steed, Alex Jennings and Kenneth Cranham, this enthralling dramatisation captures every nuance of le Carré's complex and compelling novel - the final book in John le Carré's Karla trilogy.

"My best friend Phil loves Carre and gave me this book...and I have to say I was hooked! It snowed over 10 inches the day I read this book in December '08 and I barely noticed the snow I was so engrossed in this Cold War Spy Novel. And he just gave me 3 more Carre novels I am much looking forward to read!"

" Tightly written, a fair amount of realistic spy craft, complex plotting, lots of moral doubt and a healthy dose of a fat blokes late-middle aged existential angst. That's probably not selling it to you but it's great, honest. "

" 2nd best spy novel ever written. This is a low on action, high on conversation spy novel. Not a mystery, but intelligent, very well written. "

" Quite satisfying conclusion to the search for Karla. Again, a tribute to civil servants who work without glory and flash. Quite cerebral spy novel! "

" Quite enjoying Le Carre. Last of the cold ward spy novelists. I enjoyed the Schoolboy book a bit more but this one has a great plot structure with colorful cast of characters. And I love that it's politically deep! "

" I see they made a movie of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Sadly, Gary Oldman is just a tall and thin as Alec Guinness. I wish they'd cast a short chubby actor as Smiley. I hope he at least polishes his glasses with the fat end of his tie. "

" Basically a clever concoction to give Smiley's fans a chance to enjoy the old guy's final, if unlikely, triumph over his arch nemesis, "Smiley's People" is in the guilty pleasure division of Le Carre novels. "

" A fine book, but I thought the end of Karla was disappointing. In Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy, Smiley predicts that Karla's undoing will be his extremism. Instead, it proves to be his love for his daughter. I thought it was an uncharacteristic ending. "
