"I can hardly believe slavery is still alive. This book was excellent. There was no drama, no exaggeration, just plain simple straight forward events. The events were horrific. I do not understand how ANY person can treat a fellow human being or even an animal with such cruelty. I am referring especially to Rahab. I don't understand the mentality. Mende was a hero herself in sharing her story and the journalist Damien Lewis had to be incredibly gentle to have coaxed the truth from her. I will think about the freedoms I take for granted more often having read this."

" I read this book last year. I was very much moved and at the same time appalled that such events occur in a "civilized and modern" society that we claim to be in this century. But what is most intriguing is the persistence and bravery of a women to change her circumstance. "

" It was an amazing story of a young girl forced into slavery. How anyone can treat a child the way she was treated is hard to understand. Even harder not to feel angry. That this is happening right now, sad indeed. Read it so that you are aware. Complacency is not the solution. "

" Fascinating but difficult to read what this poor young girl had to go through when she was brutally abducted at age 12. Her ability to make it through this after years and years is uplifting and amazing but seeing how others can treat an innocent child makes me so sad about the inhumanity.... "
