Search the Dark is the third of Todd's mysteries set just after the First World War. Dorset is the latest setting for the talents of Inspector Ian Rutledge, a veteran of the First World War still haunted-literally-by his actions. Indeed, his personal ghost only serves to complicate things as his inner doubts blend into the trauma of the case. The disappearance of two children, the murder of a woman supposed to be their mother, and an unstable suspect who may or may not be guilty form the bones of Todd's latest psychological thriller, augmented by the in-depth and impressive character analysis that distinguishes his novels.

"A good mystery...the ending was not what I was thinking it would be. But I don't like books (or movies) with suicide (especially with a gun) in them. I enjoyed the style of this book, once I was about 4 chapters in. I will be looking for another Ian Rutledge book soon. "

" Liked it - will definitely read more in this series "
— Therese, 6/26/2011" I really liked the relationship descriptions of these characters. Rutledge always seems to make enemies with the town folk for getting to the bottom of a murder. I was waiting for Rutledge to get the best out of that jerk, Hildebrand and solving the mystery. :) "
— Lisa, 4/12/2011" Another Inspector Rutledge mystery--particularly enjoyed this one set in rural Britain.

"
— Florence, 3/29/2011" Another Rutledge mystery. Was an enjoyable enough read, but nothing special. In fact, now that I think about it, I can't remember who the murderer was and I only finished it a few days ago. Couldn't have been all that great. Blends in a bit with the first two I read. "
— Amydebolt, 3/15/2011" Of course it was excellent. The killer a surprise (although I was pretty close) but I am getting tired of all these country constables and society chicks hating on poor Ian. "
— Gaynel, 3/3/2011" another very well written mystery. i am making my way thru this series and love all the twists and turns the stories take. "
— Jeanne, 11/6/2010" Third in the Ian Rutledge series. A bit hard to follow, with confusing characters and actions. Otherwise well written, very intelligent and precise prose. "
