Best-selling author Louis Begley created a beguiling icon of middle age in About Schmidt. Recently widowed, pushed into retirement by his law firm, at odds with his family, Albert Schmidt captivated readers with his cautious courage. Now he is facing ever mounting challenges of life, love, and age. Schmidt is happy living with his affectionate young girlfriend, Carrie. His grumpy daughter, on the other hand, seems to want only money from him. What really disturbs Schmidt, however, is the growing attention of his neighbor, the exotic Michael Mansour. Wealthy and persistent, Mansour seems determined to draw Schmidt into his lavish personal and financial affairs. Louis Begley's aim is perfect as he targets the joys and pitfalls facing our graying hero. Audie Award-winning narrator George Guidall brings out all the wry humor of a man who is fully aware of his flaws and weaknesses, yet remains strong.

"Loved it. Wasn't too sure when I first started it, but I loved the setting although I had never been to the Hamptons and the characters were a whacky bunch. The satire made the book worth reading for me. It reminded me of the Rabbit books by Updike."

" Not quite as good as the first Schmidtie book, but enjoyable nonetheless...I can follow the foibles of Schmidtie for some time to come, he is never boring (even though he thinks he is!) "
— Lauri, 11/8/2013" The second in the Schmidt series. Another well-crafted Begley effort, with a simpler plot line than his first one, and shorter in length. Schmidt does grow on one, after one gets used to him! "
— Ron, 6/11/2013" I am looking forward to getting old, part II. "
— Wolfgang, 2/22/2013" A continuation of the wonderful story of middle age angst and life after early or forced retirement. "
— Dick, 5/30/2012" Glad that Schmidtie got a sequel, but didn't measure up. "
— Dragana, 11/17/2011" You know those books you keep reading because you think it has to get better? Well, this one does, but the ending is not so good as to offset all the time spent reading about a whiny old man, his slutty girlfriend, and his bitchy daughter. Blech. "
— Stephanie, 10/19/2011" Awesome story about what happens when you're old and you've been left behind. "
— Brittany, 4/7/2011" Enjoyed the movie, so tried the book. Not as impressed. It was just "OK" "
— Bobby, 1/14/2011" I am looking forward to getting old. "
— Wolfgang, 2/5/2010" a good read, nothing earth shattering, somewhat heartfelt "ing" from a man's perspective............. "
— Geralyn, 11/1/2009" Sooo much better than the movie! Nothing like the movie.
Lois Begley is a cool, calm elegant writer.
Readin him is like drinking a dry martini! "
— Christi, 10/9/2009" This book has little resemblance to the movie (Thank God). I loved it so much, I read just about everything available by Begley at my local library. Begley is a master. "
— Deborah, 9/11/2009" Creepy, and not in a good way. "
— Pam, 1/1/2009" Gak. Began wishing that Schmidt had died instead of his wife. "
— Ginny, 10/10/2008" Nothing really like the movie, which was weird. Good book, but I think having seen the movie first ruined it with expectations. "
