Publisher Description

As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are that rare breed of rock band: critically lauded and popularly embraced by millions of fans, their albums consistently sell into the stratosphere - their CD Californication sold over 13 million copies alone.

Now, in Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis defies the rock star clichés. In his telling, we can see everything he has done has been part of a passionate journey. Kiedis is a man in love with everything - the darkness, the death, the disease. Even his descent into drug addiction was a part of that journey; another element that he has transformed into art. Scar Tissue is a fascinating account of a fast-lane life, addiction, and a moving story of eventual recovery and redemption.

"First of all, I am a huge fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But this read surprised me in a good way. It's sort of what you would anticipate, a story about a junkie musician and his life of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll, but it's more than that. It is very intense and there are passages in it where I actually felt like I was high, it was so descriptive, so raw and so honest at times it was riveting. The pain of his addiction is so real reading it was uncomfortable. There are several twists and turns in the story that have you on edge. Without saying too much, there are some important family ties that give his tale a lot of heart, depth, even anguish. You know he's alive, but you are still afraid he is going to die. It is entertaining too. As a bonus the bands history and all the adversity that nearly devoured them turned out to be a catalyst for some of the most amazing Rock-N-Roll every made."

" I'm no RHCP fan, nor am I an Anthony Kiedis fan. I can't say this book helped me appreciate either in the end. I'm always fascinated by drug bios that delve into the depth of despair and this book doesn't disappoint on that front, but I'm also always looking for a good look into the music in a rock bio and felt like it all took a serious back seat to the drug abuse. I suppose that's par for the course here, but all I can say is it just ended up not being very enjoyable as a result. "

" heroin...crack...heroin...ego....fire this guy....heroin...do this beautiful girl...do that beautiful girl...more heroin....write some songs...Anthony is just too self indulgent to be very interesting...It would be nice if he thought about somebody but himself. maybe that's too much to expect from a rock star. " Probably biased cause I hate their music, but this isn't the most interesting rock bio you will ever read. At times the drug tales actually border on glamorizing, but really Kiedis isn't interesting/talented enough of a guy to warrant a book. "

" Excellent. Started reading it when i was incarcerated for a short time and couldnt put it down. It's Anthony writing mainly about his addiction to heroin and cocaine. the many time he became sober only to use again. The woman in his life whom he loved. And the death of his bandmate from aoverdose. "
