Publisher Description

In 1895, when Captain Joshua Slocum completed the first solo circumnavigation on his 37-foot sloop, the Spray, no one believed it could be done. This firsthand account of Captain Slocum's remarkable voyage - 3 years and 46,000 miles - is full of adventures, dangers, and triumphs. Stormy seas, hostile natives, Moorish pirates, and even a bizarre meeting with President Paul Kruger of the Transvaal, who insisted that Slocum could never have sailed around the world, since everyone with the meanest intelligence knew the world was flat, make up the fabric of the most wonderful travelogue of all.

"A good travel account. Made me want to learn to sail. Slocum makes it sound like, apart from a few rough patches, the trip was actually pretty easy. I think that's generally true of most travel. People believe it's harder than it is because the rough patches make the good stories. "

" I've read it before online, but finally got the book. The illustrations are magnificent Victorian line drawings--lovely. Lots of lessons about solo vs. lonely, gratitude vs. ego. Even if you don't dream of the sea, it's a great read. "

" Very good book that gives some insight on what it's like to sail single handed for long stretches of time. Can get a little technical at times, but that's not necessarily a negative. It does get a little repetitious towards the end when he's basically doing the same thing over and over again at different ports and islands. "

" I'm sadly not in a mood for romance books right now (sorry Rachel! and the 30 books she's loaned me). I'm more into complete lack of romance and adventure stories. That's my life right now: no romance, one BIG adventure. "

" Sailing around the globe is a dream of mine. This trip has inspired countless other adventure seekers to attempt to circumnavigate the world. Some have been successful. Others have failed. Joshua S succeeded (and even built his boat from scratch and by hand) "

" I found this sea adventure in 1896-1898 profound and decidedly worth reading. Slocum's voyage in a 37 foot sloop he built himself, was the first solo trip around the world. "

" 1895, Joshua Slocum set out to be the first to sail solo around the world. It took me awhile to get into this book, lots of nautical terms. Then I discovered a glossary in the back. Big help. A very interesting person. I enjoyed his confidence and passion for the sea. "
