Publisher Description

Thomas Merton, toward the end of his life, warned of a pervasive form of contemporary violence that is unique to our times: overwork and overactivity. In his work as a minister and caregiver, Wayne Muller observed the effects of this violence on our communities, our families, and our people. He responds to this escalating war on our spirits in this audio guide, and immerses listeners in the sacred tradition of the shabbat - the day of rest - a tradition that is all but forgotten in an age where consumption, speed, and productivity have become the most valued human commodities. He offers practices and exercises that reflect the sabbath as recognized in Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism. Through his way of nourishment and repose, Muller teaches, we welcome insights and blessings and arise only with stillness and time.

"I so enjoyed this book. The world is so busy, our communities have a million things to offer for "what to do today." We can barely find time to connect with our families face to face. The first thing many of us think of when we hear the word Sabbath is "day of worship" and yes, that is part of it for many, but not for all. Just the fact that we make time to STOP, to stop, no matter where we are in our busyness and demand that we take a break - alone, with our families, worship as community or meditate alone. A forced rest - but not the kind that some of us remember as children, where we could do nothing but sit on the couch and listen to the old folks talk. Sabbath is supposed to be a time of joy. Sabbath is to be a time of renewal of the body, mind and spirt through bathing leasurely, relaxation, play, sex, good food and and time with friends or family that is supporting and loving. It is a time to take a break from technology by disconnecting from the phone, computer, iPads and iPods (unless music is your path to renewal), but you get the point. Whatever is out there, will still be there when we return in 24 hours. Mr. Muller gives us plenty to think about from little mini-sabbaths to a full fledged 24 hours of renewal. This book could save your life! I left my copy on the cruise ship hoping someone else might consider taking sabbath for more than three days a year!"

" Listened to it read by author on cd. Loved it. It is joining my all-time favorites list. Great ideas on why sabbath has been important in many faith traditions, and why we need it, and very practical approaches to creating it in our lives. I enjoyed the author's reading of it as well--it was a wonderful book to listen to on my work commute--very centering. "

" This book was a gift to me from Jeanne Randels and it changed my life. I like how it uses world religions to illustrate its concepts, but also wish there was a version that was accessible to non-religious people. I'm of the opinion that most people living in the U.S. would benefit from learning how to truly integrate rest into our lives and learn to better respect the important role it plays in our lives. "

" For me, the book did not present new ideas as much as it re-energized the need for time apart with plenty of low-cost, easy-to-implement suggestions and inspiring examples of how others observe sabbath time. Reading it provides a bit of sabbath time also, and I appreciated the poems sprinkled throughout. "

" One of those life-changing books. I read it 2 years ago and keep coming back to it. It has a simple message: we are not machines, and we cannot thrive in our constantly "on" culture. We have been designed to delight in rhythm and rest. What I love about this book is has Judeo-Christian roots, but is accessible to folks who don't adhere to a particular faith. There are mini essays (3-5 pages) developing a particular facet of Sabbath, followed by 1st person descriptions of a particular Sabbath practice. Very good. "
