When Lister got drunk, he really got drunk!

After celebrating his birthday with a Monopoly-board pub crawl around London, he came to in a burger bar on one of Saturns moons, wearing a lady's pink crimplene hat and a pair of yellow fishing waders, with no money and a passport in the name of Emily Berkenstein.

Joining the Space Corps seemed a good idea. Red Dwarf, a clapped out spaceship, was bound for Earth. It never made it, leaving Lister as the last remaining member of the human race, three million light years from Earth, with only a dead man, a senile computer, and a highly evolved cat for company.

They begin their journey home. On the way, they'll break the light barrier. They'll meet Einstein, Archimedes, God, and Norman Wisdom...and discover an alternative plane of reality.

"I'm a huge fan of the series... and definitely a huge fan of it in book form. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor definitely were successful in transferring the dry wit and sarcastic humor of the show Red Dwarf to the series of books. I've read this book a gajillion times and I know I will read it again. I'm also such a huge geek I own the audio version (actually the best is the "Radio Show" audio version -- effing brilliant) and I listen to it far too frequently. It's still funny. Dare I use the words "comic genius?!""

" Audiobook version. A reread from... at least ten years ago, I think. While I generally find it quite cringey to listen to Chris Barrie doing all the voices for extended periods of time, the chapters of this audiobook are only about six minutes long so I managed to deal with it (also the Cat doesn't have too much dialogue...) I enjoyed this a lot. I'd forgotten a lot of the BTL stuff (Juanita Chicata... lol what a "Brazilian" name wow). I knew the books were more depressing than the series, but this was about 1000 times more depressing than I remembered as well. But interesting! "

" If you like the Red Dwarf series, you'll like this book! It's got all the stuff you love about the series with added campiness! It's more like an entire series in and of itself instead of one small part of the series which makes it amazing! "

" Not the greatest piece of sci-fi literature ever written, but if you like the show you'll like the book. Also, if you've tried showing your friends the Red Dwarf series and they've looked at you like there's something wrong with your brain that you're laughing at this, it might be a good introduction to those who did not grow up watching it. Basically the book covers the first six episodes of the series with parts added to explain what you don't quite understand in the show. A must read for fans. "

" Just about as good as this genre (humorous sci-fi) can get. Not quite as poignant as Douglas Adams at his best, so not quite five stars. Read it on your holiday or on your commute. "

" My copy of this is quite odd, it was bound incorrectly so that chunks of the pages are in the wrong order. Nevertheless, I struggled on to read one of the best books based on a television series (or, perhaps, the other way around). "

" Absolutely hysterical. I loved every minute of it. It used to be one of my favourites that I read and re-read. If you like the TV show, this has so much more, giving the reader a bigger insight to the characters and their lives as well as allowing some nostalgic moments from the series come through. "

" Ah! The great seeking of 'Hitchhiker's' light! I actually do love this book, and it has such a wonderful media relationship which has allowed me to connect my enjoyment of it with other, less geekier than myself. Still wish the sequels hadn't been so... err... different in tone. "
