Den slutar 1989 med den dramatiska och gåtfulla titelberättelsen som bland annat innehåller en oefterhärmligt dråplig skildring av mötet mellan Wallander och hans far på en egyptisk polisstation. Däremellan ger den några av de viktigaste nycklarna till personen Wallander.
