When the youngest of three sons inherits only a cat, he believes he is destined to die of starvation. But the cat turns out to be rather an extraordinary animal. Not only is he able to speak, he is also a highly resourceful and cunning creature. The cat asks for a pair of boots and a sack. He uses the sack to catch rabbits and partridges which he presents to the King as gifts from the “Marquis of Carabas.” The King is curious to meet the mysterious Marquis who sends such generous gifts. The cat manages to arrange a meeting … and by a clever plan also arranges fine clothes, a castle, land, and a princess for his master.

"Beautifully illustrated (absolutely deserving the Caldecott Medal it earned), this version of the story has the title character firmly in the driver's seat. My son's favorite line is when Puss barks at the peasant workers that if they don't do as he says he'll "turn them into sausage meat!" After we read this book for the first time about a year ago, the story became our bedtime standard."

" Caldecott Honor Book, 1991 "
— John, 2/16/2014" Puss in Boots is a top of the line book that deserves a place in every library, public, private or personal. There should be a space on the bookshelf of every bookworm, old and young alike, for this wonderful book! "
— Noelle, 1/30/2014" Nice illustrated version. Pictures aid the story, but aren't great. "
— Ruth, 1/25/2014" Love the illustrations in this classic book! Charles Perralt and Giuliano Lunelli make a great team! "
— Taylor, 1/23/2014" One of my favorite childhood books! "
— Billie, 1/18/2014" 37 months - Beautifully illustrated and a classic story that O loves. The text seems too large for the page but this would make for a good book for kids to read or follow along while pointing out words. Many stories have text that is too small to do this successfully. "
— Heather, 1/15/2014" This the longer version of Puss in Boots. This title would make more sense if it was Puss AND Boots. "
— Gideon, 1/2/2014" Really like the story. It was one of my favourites as a kid and have read it innumerable times. The good thing is that the picture which accompanies the story lines in every page give the essence of the story making it so clear and exact(specially for children to understand). "
— Harpreet, 12/29/2013" Got this for my grandson. Has beautiful illustrations. "
— Teresa, 11/30/2013" I didn't actually read it yet, but Lars read it TWICE, which means it's really great. He kept telling me about parts, and laughing. He knows the story, but really liked this edition. I picked it for the marvelous illustrations. "
— Margie, 11/27/2013" Puss is definitely a tricky kitty. Puss does deliver though when his master thinks he won't be able to get much money for the things Puss can do. "
— Samantha, 11/18/2013" The illustrations that go with the classic tale of The Marquis of Caribas and his clever kitten are great in this version of the tale. "
— Erica, 11/15/2013" I thought this Puss and Boots was a great and creative fiction book. The cat plays a witty micheiveous character and gets his master a place with a princess. The illustrations are fun and full of colors. "
— Kyle, 10/28/2013" I remember this from my early childhood as a story I put in my pocket at break times at school, like many other books, when everyone else wass running wild, I was sat on the steps in silence. "
— Jonathan, 10/18/2013" Illustrations amazing. My students could find some likenesses to the version of Puss they know best (Shrek's). Introduced some new vocabulary.... "
— John, 10/7/2013" I actually really liked this story. The illustrations were amazing and very detailed, and the story was great too. The cat did seem like he was mean, and very vicious, but he was doing it for all the right reasons for his owner. "
— Alexis, 9/22/2013" beast tale "
— Carissa, 9/14/2013" Illustrations dominate in the classic story of a cat who helps his poor owner to become a marquis, marry a princess, and own a huge estate, simply by using his wits. "
— Kate, 7/12/2013" One of my favorite books as a kid! "
— Michelle, 4/28/2013" Caldecott Honor 1991 - This is really a strange story when you think about it. "
— Alyson, 4/26/2013" This was the first version of this book that I have read. I'm not sure how that happened. I really enjoyed it. "
— Cara, 3/31/2013" I think this is a fun folk tale for children, especially those that like cats. Puss does many kind things for his master and feels proud. "
— Ashley, 2/10/2013" its a good book 4 children "
— Mihir, 1/23/2013" Luscious production and hard-edged text make this a stunning rendition. "
— Yarb, 1/3/2013" Fanciful & full of crafty power struggles. Sir Boots is truly a nobleman in this tall tale!! "
