In a Philadelphia high school, who doesn’t care about the prom? It’s pretty much the only good thing that happens there, and everyone plans to make the most of it—especially Ash’s best friend, Natalia, who’s the head of the committee and has prom stars in her eyes. Then the faculty advisor is busted for taking the prom money and Ash finds herself roped into putting together a gala dance. But she has plenty of help—from her large and loving (if exasperating!) family, from Nat’s eccentric grandmother, from the principal, from her fellow classmates. And in making the prom happen, Ash learns some surprising things about making her life happen, too.

"I bought this at the Rochester Teen Book fest a few years ago, and had it signed by the author. It was the first of her books that I read, but she's become a favorite of mine subsequently. I think this may be her best work, though--it creates a realistic, but still entertaining portrait of multiracial urban teens preparing for that classic teen milestone in new and interesting ways. Her style is breezy, but captures the voices of her characters extremely well, and I found the story both compelling and highly enjoyable."

" What I liked best... it was short. It was bearable enough to get through, but if you've ever read a book where an author is trying too hard, you'll understand why I wouldn't recommend. I think the inner-city stereotyping was just unbearable at times. The book had moments of humor and Ashley's family was quite entertaing... just enough to give 2.5 stars. "
— Tabitha, 2/12/2014" No one does attitude like Laurie Halse Anderson. I read this in one sitting, it was gripping, and well-written and fun. And I love, love, love how she describes things. There's this scene where the main character is kicking the washing machine again and again. It totally made the book worth it. "
— Angela, 2/10/2014" Good book, but I wasn't thrilled with the ending...I don't like when books end unrealistically with all conflicts being perfectly resolved. "
— Lorie, 1/28/2014" this book is not a favorite of mine its kind of a typical "teenage" label book "
— Kayla, 1/25/2014" very very good! such reality "
— Nicole, 1/24/2014" Well, what do you expect from a review by me for a Laurie Halse Anderson novel? Yes, indeed. It was truly a magical book. "

— bekah, 9/7/2013" I don't know why I don't read more from Laurie Halse Anderson. I probably should because I've loved the books she's written that I've read. I loved this book and the happily ever after ending. I would recommend it. "
— Jourdan, 8/29/2013" This was a funny book to me, I liked how it had a happy ending and everything :) "

— Lisa, 6/30/2013" i didnt really like it "
— Maddie, 5/4/2013" I got a few pages in, but I really didn't like it. It had bad language, was kinda suggestive, and was just generally icky. I also didn't like that the MC had such a nasty boyfriend. He was a totally manipulative jerk, and she just went along with it. "
— Brillare, 1/31/2013" Not what I expected after reading some of this author's other stuff. It was kind of obnoxious and crass. I wanted a sweet prom story. Sweet, this was not. Oh, well. "
— Suey, 9/17/2012" a book to make you relax and to make you laugh "
— Seneca, 6/24/2012" I enjoyed this book, it was a quick read and the characters were realistic. I felt like I was pulled along with Ashley trying to deal with the new changes in her life and in herself. "
— Mirela, 5/13/2012" So far I don't really like the way Ashley's boyfriend treats her and how she just puts up with it. "
— Kira, 12/16/2011" A little lighter than the rest of her stuff, but a good read nonetheless. "
— Honeybee, 5/23/2011" its about a girl she is going to a pretty prom dance... "
— Briana, 5/18/2011" Ugh. I love a good cheesy book about high school, but this book was terrible! The main character was not likeable at all and after about 50 pages I just skipped to the end. I really enjoyed reading Speak, so I was excited to read more of Anderson's book. Don't bother with this one. "
— Courtney, 5/9/2011" This was so ghetto and SO annoying "
— Paige, 4/30/2011" This book was terrriable. The main charecter is extreamly annoying and spends the entire book complaing. If you are looking for a reason to make Bella from twilight seem like a happy go lucky girl, please, look no furthar. "
— Savannah, 4/11/2011" I thought that this book wsa really good. "
— Sabiha709, 4/9/2011" i loved this.... even though i usually hate books like this. but it was really relatable. "

— Amanda, 3/6/2011" This book was kinda dramatic and I thought that if anything else had happend, it might as well have been a soap oprea. Well, it might not have been THAT dramatic, but it was pretty close. "
