Private Berlin takes place two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Chris Schneider works as a detective with the Berlin office of an international detective agency called Private. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles and owned by Jack Morgan.
Schneider grew up in an orphanage and has had haunting questions about his past since childhood. He takes it upon himself to do some investigating on his own and ends up being the subject of a missing person's investigation brought by his ex-fiancé, Mattie Engel, also a detective, and Private Berlin.
After Schneider's body, along with the bodies of many others, is found in a slaughterhouse, whoever committed these murders feels threatened and destroys the slaughterhouse, along with the evidence.
Not to be thrown off the track, Mattie and Private Berlin begin digging into Chris Schneider's back ground to uncover his secrets, only to find that someone is methodically killing Schneider's childhood friends.

"A bit dark as others have described but I felt like this was the Patterson of old. I enjoyed this much more than the past four or five which I feel were rushed for publication. Good to see Patterson back to form. Recommended"

— Joelle, 2/6/2014" Ok, but not as good as other "private" books. "
— Jean, 2/3/2014" Elite private investigators in Berlin lose one of their own, and opens a horrible part of past. Torturer for the East German secret police is found after hunting down young adults tha were part of his interrogation "
— Pam, 1/25/2014" Loved it........ have read the ending like 6 times...... "
— Kristin, 1/24/2014" Great series!! Love the foreign locales. "

— Cassandra, 1/17/2014" Held my attention. I did not want to put it down. "
— Barbara, 1/10/2014" I enjoyed the book not too crazy about all the descriptions of torture but that was part of what went on in that era so be it. "
— Gail, 1/7/2014" an interesting story line keeps you involved to the very end. "
— Carlene, 12/28/2013" 3.5 starts. Out of the "Private" series, this one is far superior to most of the others. If you've liked any of the collaborative work James Patterson has been doing, this is one to check out. "
— Lisa, 12/23/2013" Pretty good book also like Private London "
— Jo, 12/21/2013" A steady read to the end. Couldn't wait to get to the finale. It doesn't hurt to be reminded of the evil that men do in the name of their country. "
— Irma, 12/14/2013" Although I didn't expect too, Patterson's coauthor manages to introduce main characters, who seem real, and engage you in the story. I will read the sequel. "
— Darlene, 12/12/2013" Almost too dark for me--like most of Patterson's later works: formulaic, characters sketchily developed. When he writes by himself, Patterson is good. When he allows others to use his name to sell books, it shows. "
— Barbara, 12/3/2013" I liked this one. It was one of the better James Patterson books I have read in awhile. Quick and great story! "
— Lisa, 11/29/2013" Interesting plot with a great ending. A good read for James Patterson fans. "

— Afsana, 9/11/2013" After the previous two Private books were disappointing to me, I wasn't expecting much, but I liked this one. I'd have it in a tie for 2nd place with the original Private if I were ranking the Private books. "
— Carol, 8/8/2013" good book but particularly dark and gory. "
— Dianne, 7/28/2013" I really liked it -- a lot of twists and turns! I really like the new series. "
— Mj, 7/21/2013" I am just loving the Private series. JP has a nice solid hit with his latest installment in the series! Quick and easy but such a page-turner! "
— Dawn, 7/8/2013" These may be the only Patterson books I like; excluding the Brit-accent Private Games story. "
— Robert, 7/3/2013" Loved the action and the interplay of the characters. Another great book from a prolific author. "
— Joan, 6/13/2013" Just awful. Redundant writing, stilted dialog. Do you really need to write "the billionaire's son" & the billionaire's wife" every time they are referred to? The characters have names. "
— Marge, 5/29/2013" Definitely kept me interested. "
— Dawn, 4/23/2013" Pretty gruesome but kept me reading. Didn't figure out the bad guy but I was just going with the flow. Could be I wasn't paying close enough attention. "
— Susan, 3/21/2013" Really good...it was heartbreaking and an eye opener to just a the tip of what happened to citizens of East Berlin before the wall fell. "
— Christy, 3/17/2013" Definately reading the other private books. "
