In a period of five days, the rural college town of Davenport, California, has been rocked by two sets of brutal double murders. When another set of bodies is found, Paul Madriani, special prosecutor, must find the killer...and quickly. Physical and trace evidence lead to the arraignment of a college security guard on multiple charges of murder. But things begin to spin out of control when Madriani confronts Adrian Chambers, a defense attorney with a checkered past and a deep-seated desire for revenge against him.
Worse, while the evidence linking the suspect to the first four killings is solid, something is clearly different with the last two, and Madriani slowly begins to realize there is another killer in their midst. It is only during the trial - when he is fighting for both the conviction of one killer and the identity of another - that Madriani discovers shocking answers that go far deeper than anyone could have imagined.

"Not my favorite reading. Terribly gory, kind of "slow," and very negative descriptions of characters. Amazing how my thinking processes worked as I observed this author being so negative w/his characters. Not something I really enjoyed. " — Marilyn (4 out of 5 stars)

" Prime Witness by Steve Martini (1994) "
" in a desperate need for a crap read when my access to books is limited, this was appropriate. otherwise, it is a waste of time. "
" Good one. I did not see this ending coming. "
" Very good story, with a surprise ending. Never saw it coming. "
" Steve Martini offers another well-done Paul Madriani tale. This is my second in the series and it's comforting to know there are many more out there waiting to be read. "
" It took me much longer to read this one as I would have liked, I just kept falling asleep reading it even though it was interesting! (And I figured out "who done it" before it was revealed!!) "
" I found it a bit too predictable - or maybe I just got used to reading other writers' brand of suspense/mystery? I don't know. This isn't quite the first time I've read a 'courtroom thriller', but it's the first time I've almost put down a book of this genre due to boredom. Sorry. "
" Another fast-paced rollercoaster ride of a book by Steve Martini. "
" Too much legal detailing. Good and unexpected ending. "
" I love a mystery that surprises me at the end. I listened to it in the van so it took awhile, but it still got me. "
" Paul Madriani is serving as district attorney trying a serial killer against former attorney Chambers that was discredited by him. "
" Wow, what a great book, sure kept me guessing all the way to the end. I do like this author. "
" I generally like Steve Martini books, but this book was so NOT action packed and boring that it was a huge chore to get through it. The only saving grace was that I totally did not see the ending coming. And that was the only reason for two stars. It would have been one otherwise. "
" If you like Steve Martini, especially his Paul Madriani character, you'll appreciate this book. Some parts were a little slow, but the end had a nice twist. "
" A good read..like the twist at the end:) "
" I liked the humor of the main charactor. I might have given this book 4 stars had I read it without interuption. "
" This was my first Martini book and highly recommended by a friend. I found this book compelling and well written. Since then i tried to find every Paul Madriani book there is. A perfect read when its a weekend and youre alone! "
" I thought I solved this one but am always shocked by the twist in the end. "
" Very tense thriller. Kept me in suspense throughout the entire book! "
" The book had its good points but it was kind of dragging a little. The action , courtroom drama associated with Grisham style thriller was kind of missing . Overall the plot was little far fetched with too many coincidences but in the end alls well that ends well :) "
" Murder mystery. Good story although there were times when I asked myself, "Where are these folks going in this investigation?" "
