Willful and high-spirited, exerting his independence at every turn, 10-year-old Robert "Robbie" Burns Hewitt plans to live life to the fullest--because the world is going to end at the turn of the century anyway! The year 1900 is fast approaching. Robbie decides that living by The Ten Commandments, which have been drilled into his head by his preacher father, is not meant for him--since he "ain't got the knack for holiness." On his quest to be his own person, he stirs up trouble daily. Before long, he must choose between the truth and a lie while a man's life hangs in the balance. Newbery Award-winning author Katherine Paterson brings to life Robbie's honest emotions of anger, jealousy and fear, leading him to make a number of disturbing choices. Despite the challenges, Robbie emerges as an engaging character with a good heart.

"Great story about how certian people have thier share problems. That their faith in God helps them deal with the issues that faces these people on a daily basis. Pick up the book yourself and enjoy the story."

" I love Katherine Paterson for giving the world Jacob Have I Loved, which makes just about anything else she's written pale in comparison. Preacher's Boy does not have the same beauty or depth of JHIL, but it's a good read with Paterson's usual humanity and humor woven throughout her characters. "
— Molly, 10/23/2013" It seemed to me that this took too much from Tom Sawyer. There wasn't anything bad about that, or the story, but it didn't jump out at me. Not very memorable. "
— Billybobjoe, 7/30/2013" I thought this one was very real and I appreciated the perspective. "
— Lindsay, 7/22/2013" OK, but probably my least favorite Katherine Paterson book thus far. I did like many of the values portrayed by the main character, his best friend, and his father - loyalty, family, compassion, consequences of a hot temper, honesty, etc. "
— Debbie, 7/17/2013" The characters were too unlikable. The first part is such an info dump that I couldn't keep reading. "
