When Pollyanna Whittier goes to live with her sour-tempered aunt after her father’s death, things seem bad enough. But then a dreadful accident ensues. However, Pollyanna’s sunny nature and good humor prove to have an astonishing effect on all around her, and this wonderful tale of how cheerfulness can conquer adversity has remained one of the world’s most popular children’s books since its first publication in 1913.

" I found the book too slow and boring. Maybe it's because I'm a negative person, but I found her irritating. "

" Love this story! Sweet. Simple. Easy read. A great read aloud to your children. Highly recommend reading before seeing the movie...especially the Disney version...My daughter is firm in her stance that it makes no sense to have Pollyanna fall from a tree...great book for discussing choosing a great attitude no matter what. "

" I just finished reading this with my 8 yo daughter. Ya just can't help but decide to play "the game". Love the attitude and the influence once person can have on so many.... "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Annie | 1/14/2014

" This book was so sickly sweet that it was hard to read, even in middle school. And I love sweet novels. Pollyanna seems much too cheerful and good to relate to, unlike other fictional orphans. "

" It was a very good uplifting read. Chapter 22, when Pollyanna talks with the minister is my favorite chapter. If you've seen the Disney movie, it doesn't follow a whole lot of the book, unfortunately. So read the book, it's better! :-) "

" This book was a fun read! Trust me, if you think the Disney version was over-the-top with sweetness and gladness, this book may be too much happiness for you to handle. They toned it down for the movie, if you can believe that! "

" I think this book was written to show that if you are happy you make other people happy; and a good way to be happy is to always look on the bright side. Pollyanna helped lots of people and made them happy and then when Pollyanna needed help being happy, they helped her. "
