Julie Metz’s life changes forever on one ordinary January afternoon when her husband, Henry, collapses on the kitchen floor and dies in her arms. Suddenly, this mother of a six-year-old is the young widow in a bucolic small town. And this is only the beginning. Seven months after Henry’s death, just when Julie thinks she is emerging from the worst of it, comes the rest of it: she discovers that what had appeared to be the reality of her marriage was but a half-truth. Henry had hidden another life from her.

“He loved you so much.” That’s what everyone keeps telling her. It’s true that he loved Julie and their six-year-old daughter ebulliently and devotedly, but as she starts to pick up the pieces and rebuild her life without Henry in it, she learns that Henry had been unfaithful throughout their twelve years of marriage. The most damaging affair was ongoing—a tumultuous relationship that ended only with Henry’s death.

For Julie, the only thing to do was to get at the real truth—to strip away the veneer of “perfection” that was her life and confront each of the women beneath the veneer. Perfection is the story of Julie Metz’s journey through chaos and transformation as she creates a different life for herself and her young daughter. It is the story of coming to terms with painful truths, of rebuilding both a life and an identity after betrayal and widowhood. It is a story of rebirth and happiness—if not perfection.

Quotes & Awards

  • “Metz’s Perfection chronicles with lapidary precision one woman’s climb back to happiness after not just a spouse’s death, but also the shocking recognition that her life before that death was not what she had thought it was. The journey is a painful one, but Ms. Metz is much the stronger for having survived to recount it.”

Julie Powell, New York Times bestselling author of Julie & Julia

  • “A fascinating memoir by a woman who, after learning of her much-loved late husband’s history of affairs, decides to confront her former rivals.”

    People

  • “Heart-wrenching but triumphant.”

    Glamour

  • “A visual standout. [Metz] brings refreshing candor to a startling, painful tale.”

    New York Times

  • “Readers will be mesmerized. Her honesty about middle-aged sex and fear of never finding the ‘new’ right someone make this a delectable summer read.”

    USA Today

  • “[A] dark and affecting memoir…Metz’s road to emotional honesty proves cautionary and trying.”

    Publishers Weekly

" getting over betrayal, and getting on with life. well written "

" A bit of a slow read. About a woman that discovers her husband's infidelities after his untimely death. I won't add any spoilers, but some parts were more interesting than others. The bits when she vacationed in Maine were interesting, because it was on the same island I grew up on. Others seemed too detailed and drawn out. When I love a book, I will read it multiple times. I won't be reading this one again. "

" I really didn't think I'd like this book, but I did. I would recommend it to any woman, especially one who has suffered a loss due to divorce, death or betrayal (thing I don't normally want to read about). "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Samantha | 1/3/2014

" This book was really great at the beginning with the intrigue and horrifying secrets, but then it sort of wound down into a "finding yourself" journey of mid-life changes that I wasn't really into. In other words, 'it got boring'. =) "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Tisha | 1/2/2014

" Overall the book was good ,however, the ending wasn't great. It was like the good movie you saw with the horrible ending. It seemed like the author gave up once she was getting towards the end of the book and just threw an ending together. "

" It was a little boring in spots, but the story itself is riveting. I saw her on Oprah and once I had faces with the characters it made it even more interesting. A crazy story about cheating and how someone can really lead a double life with their spouse in the dark. "

" The beginning was so engrossing. I blew through the first 150 pages within a couple of hours. But then things slowed way down and I began to lose interest. It was a struggle to finish, but I did out of sheer determination to always finish what I start. Nice that there was a happy ending. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Judith | 4/18/2012

" Betrayal's venom poisons one's heart and slithers through the daylight hours as much as it does the darkness. It dispels the illusions of perfection we build. Julie and I have a lot in common. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Carla | 5/11/2011

" Metz is an excellent writer and her story is harrowing, but the self-involved tone in the last 1/3 of the book was a turn off. Worth the read, but could have benefited from some better editing down of text. "
