Paper Doll Lina by Robyn Lucas is a wonderful women’s fiction novel where I rooted for Lina the entire time to find the strength to rise up and escape a life-threatening, abusive relationship. Lucas pours on the heartfelt emotion to describe the cringeworthy, manipulative way that Lina’s husband has made her into a ‘paper doll’ of herself. Lucas skillfully guides her readers through the minefield of Lina’s journey so that, independent of her terrible husband, Lina finds her own path to happiness. There are outside influences, but as in the best women’s fiction, Lucas makes sure that Lina finds her own happiness first. Once she does, readers will cheer. When Lina gets her icing on the cake and finds that special someone who cherishes her for who she is, readers will want to cry. Paper Doll Lina is quite an emotional ride, and just like in the classic Pinocchio, the painful journey is well worth the rocky road traveled. Readers happily witness a paper doll transform for her real-life happy ending. I can’t wait for Lucas’s next story!
