Clarice and Dave Johnson are a married couple struggling to overcome physical trauma, personal disappointments, and unrealized expectations. They also have differing opinions on what it means to be successful and live a meaningful life. Clarice, a designer-label, luxury-car kind of woman, is driven by her quest to climb the social ladder; Dave, who feels at home in his blue jeans and pick-up truck, is satisfied coaching little league and running a janitorial service.

After Clarice sustains injuries in a car accident, the constant presence of her physical therapist, Julie, creates strife that quickly moves the Johnson's marriage into crisis mode. Clarice and Dave struggle to find resolution as they learn the importance of promises made and kept – and discover that help sometimes comes from unlikely places.

" Our book club is currently reading this and will discuss it in Feb. We selected this title not only because of the movie but also the dynamic relationship between husband and wife which is truly tested. T.D. Jakes is an inspirational writer who uses Bible teachings to support his characters decisions. "

" This is a book about a married couple that has basically lost their passion. The story moves extremely slow until the middle, but it's not enough to keep the book from being on the boring side. No disrespect to the Bishop, but the writing just fell flat for me. "

" T.D. Jakes did an awesome job writing this book of character vs. society. So many times we get caught up with everyday life that we get side tracked about what's really important and neccessary for a successful life. Dave and Clarice the married couple in this story each had their own ideas of what success was. Dave's idea of success was a family, coaching a baseball team of troubled boys and owning his own business. Clarice's idea was climbing the ladder of success as a real estate agent making top dollars and living way beyond their means. But the trials and tribulation of life quickly brings forth the vows they made to each other and before God. Once the temptations, a meddlesome mother and not as much money coming in started to weigh on them the Pastor that married them had to remind them that God has to be that third cord in any marriage for it to be successful; that there are going to be test to challenge that marriage. Once they were reminded of their vows and the love that they had for one another the story builds back up to end with a positive ending. This book is a very good read. "
