Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is investigating the bizarre slaying of Katie Bishop, a member of Brighton's social elite. Her husband Brian appears to be in the clear - he was in another town at the time, sound asleep. But Grace begins to suspect the presence of a doppelganger: is someone else - almost identical to Bishop - involved in the crime?

Grace's diligent exhuming of murky secrets soon demonstrates that the Bishops' outwardly settled lives had darker corners. And as Grace gets close to the truth, he finds - paradoxically - that it's his own beleaguered private life which is on the line. Download and start listening now!

Listener Opinions

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Mike | 2/5/2014

" Really enjoyed this despite being a rather long 620 pages. The ending was a little sudden, and without spoiling it, I was left wanting more details about how the killer managed to get away with some of the deceptions. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Carey Combe | 2/2/2014

" A series that is getting better and better, definitely on a par with Rebus, with, I think, more rounded characters. Lovely not having a hero that has alcohol problems! Can't wait to read the next three! "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Jude | 1/25/2014

" [From Dead Simple:] 2 stars is probably a little harsh. They're decent enough detective novels: well-written, clever plots, etc. I just can't entirely dismiss the somewhat Daily Mail taste to the politics or the dearth of gay characters in a series set in Brighton. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Vicky Anderson | 1/24/2014

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Beth | 1/11/2014

" Love love love this author. He's a Brit; hard to find his books in the libraries. Go to the bigger bookstores or order from Amazon. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Gary | 1/9/2014

" for me, this was the best so far, "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Nick Ertz | 1/8/2014

" This is a very British mystery. The author has captured all the nuances of various British characters (and the audio version makes it come to life). The story is engaging and while you think you have a handle on what's happening, there is more. This is a series I will continue to follow. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Wanrong | 1/6/2014

" Considering I'm a mystery buff who prefers the plot to unravel slowly, I had thought the early clue was a little lame. Until I realised that there was yet another twist in the tale! Not bad at all.. "

    " Okay; not great. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Karolyn | 12/22/2013

" Another good book from Peter James, was hooked from the start and the book just got better the more you read of it. Full of suspense and intrigue, did the husband kill his wife? Read the book and find out! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lynn Kearney | 12/16/2013

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Arfi | 12/14/2013

" Twins eh? There are twists and turns. The plots are interesting and I don't know how Roy Grace couldn't tell which is who? Don't they have rather different appearance? Anyway, a bit disappointed with Sandy thing. Will look forward to reading some more sequence of this book. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Ellie | 2/26/2013

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Adele Mitchell | 8/24/2012

" As I am reading the Grace series in order, this is the best book out of the first three without a doubt. I did actually figure out part of the plot fairly early on, but by then I was hooked, so it really didn't matter. A great book and I thoroughly recommend the series. Bring on book 4 now. "
