Publisher Description

Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is investigating the bizarre slaying of Katie Bishop, a member of Brighton's social elite. Her husband Brian appears to be in the clear - he was in another town at the time, sound asleep. But Grace begins to suspect the presence of a doppelganger: is someone else - almost identical to Bishop - involved in the crime?

Grace's diligent exhuming of murky secrets soon demonstrates that the Bishops' outwardly settled lives had darker corners. And as Grace gets close to the truth, he finds - paradoxically - that it's his own beleaguered private life which is on the line.

"As I am reading the Grace series in order, this is the best book out of the first three without a doubt. I did actually figure out part of the plot fairly early on, but by then I was hooked, so it really didn't matter. A great book and I thoroughly recommend the series. Bring on book 4 now."

" Really enjoyed this despite being a rather long 620 pages. The ending was a little sudden, and without spoiling it, I was left wanting more details about how the killer managed to get away with some of the deceptions. "

" A series that is getting better and better, definitely on a par with Rebus, with, I think, more rounded characters. Lovely not having a hero that has alcohol problems! Can't wait to read the next three! "

" [From Dead Simple:] 2 stars is probably a little harsh. They're decent enough detective novels: well-written, clever plots, etc. I just can't entirely dismiss the somewhat Daily Mail taste to the politics or the dearth of gay characters in a series set in Brighton. "

" This is a very British mystery. The author has captured all the nuances of various British characters (and the audio version makes it come to life). The story is engaging and while you think you have a handle on what's happening, there is more. This is a series I will continue to follow. "
