" I tried really hard to get into this book but I just couldn't. I think you either love it or get really bored with it. It's like reading a soap opera and although the characters aren't too bad, it's something to do with the writing that makes it less exciting....or boring at times. It's not terrible, but not great either. "

" If you like historical fiction, then the details in this book will grab you. It did drag a bit in the middle, but the author did a good job of adding tension to key places that keeps you engaged. Toward the end, I didn't want the story to end - always a good sign! "

" LOVED this book! Picked it up from the library on a whim, and read all 630 pages in less than 2 weeks. I didn't realize until the end that there are 2 additional books - can't wait to read them! "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Corey | 7/5/2013

" I picked up this book with high hopes. It's a story of a wealthy British family during WWI so I was hoping for a Downton Abby fix and it's a trilogy so I was hoping to be busy reading for a looong time. It was just OK. The characters aren't richly drawn and nothing of much interest happens to them. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Kathy Meyer | 5/8/2011

" Another book recommended to me. If you like big novels this one is for you. I thought the story line for some of the characters was a bit tedious and I was able to determine some of the plot. I will read the other two in the series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Melissa | 2/1/2011

" This was my first Penny Vincenzi. It reminded me of the Judith Krantz and Jacqueline Briskin novels I used to devour when I was in high school. Mildly trashy fun. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lisa | 1/23/2011

" Ah, Penny Vincenzi! Perfect for reading when you're bouncing along over rough outback roads en route to the Hunter Valley. Undemanding plot, a few tense moments, sweet sentimental scenes of mother love and some passionate lovers, neatly juxtaposed with the stolid security of marriage. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Catherine | 1/11/2011

" Great read! It draws you in and keeps you absorbed. Can't wait to read the other two in the series! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Marci | 1/11/2011

" Vincenzi is a fabulous writer that draws you in to the era and the characters. You step away from your world for awhile as you read this book. A sexy historical read (not too sexy tho). "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Karen | 1/2/2011

" Love, love, love this author! Now to find the Books 2 and 3 of this trilogy....... "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Kelly | 11/15/2010

" I really enjoyed the first half of this book. However it continued on and on and on. The further into the book I got the more the characters and their story lines seemed to decline. It turned into a boring and never ending story about one person's affair. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Miriam | 11/14/2010

" A fun, engrossing, obsessive kind of read. You feel like you know all the characters and just can't wait to see what they do next. And there are two more books in the series! Joy. "
