Quotes & Awards

  • “[An] irresistible outing.”

    Horn Book magazine

  • “Sure to be a smash.”

    Kirkus Reviews

  • “Kids with multicultural classmates will recognize (or learn) Niño’s many Spanish exclamations. A closing note explains the lucha libre culture.”

  • “One by one, Niño faces and defeats his formidable opponents: The Mummy of Guanajuato, the stone Olmec Head, La Llorona, the Alien, and the devil-like El Chamuco. But when his little sisters wake up from their naps, he faces his biggest challenge yet: Las Hermanitas. Everything about this book is well integrated and thought out…[and] an author’s note gives some background information about lucha libre and its popularity in Mexico. This is a near-perfect book, and absolutely essential for any collection.”

    School Library Journal

  • “To a background of wild cheering and jaunty music, young wrestler Niño hears his name and enters an (imaginary) ring. Narrator Adriana Sananes is as animated as the crowd and as pumped up as Niño himself. Her voice speeds and slows, rises and falls with the thrill of each bout. One by one Niño takes on his opponents—from the Guanajuato Mummy to El Chamuco—and sometimes outwits them with a “tickle tackle” or distracts them with a puzzle to solve. When the three o’clock alarm sounds in the recording, it’s time for Niño’s little sisters—las herminitas—to awaken from their nap. And they’re Niño’s biggest challenge of all! The production concludes with notes about the Mexican form of wrestling known as LUCHA LIBRE. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.”

  • “This is a treat to listen to and will be well loved by Latino and non-Latino families alike who are looking to add a bit of fun and culture to their day.”

    School Library Journal (audio review)

  • Winner of an AudioFile Earphones Award
