Publisher Description

Eve Williams is about to discover just how the other half really live....

Above stairs: Lord Netherwood keeps his considerable fortune ticking over with the profits from his three coal mines in the vicinity. It's just as well the coal is of the highest quality as the upkeep of Netherwood Hall, his splendid estate on the outskirts of town, doesn't come cheap. And that's not to mention the cost of keeping his wife and daughters in the latest fashions - and keeping the heir, the charming but feckless Tobias, out of trouble.

Below stairs: Eve Williams, is the wife of one of Lord Netherwood's most stalwart employees. When her ordered existence amid the terraced rows of the miners' houses is brought crashing down by the twin arrivals of tragedy and charity, Eve must look to her own self-sufficiency, and talent, to provide for her three young children. And it's then that 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' collide in truly dramatic fashion....

"Really really enjoyed this debut novel! I can't wait to read the next in the series and am waiting for September with bated breath! The main characters are wonderful, and the secondary characters are surprisingly well rounded too. A must for fans of preiod dramas and Downton Abbey!!"

" Great read, which is full of wonderful characters. I especially loved Eve and her fabulous cooking coming to life and with Anna behind her you're just cheering them on all the way. I loved the history behind the miners too. "

" Well it's only a potboiler really but a very good one, like soaking in a hot bath or eating a box of chocolates. Downton Abbey with different characters, couldn't put it down. "

" I didn't want this story to end... While it took a while to set the scene, I truly felt immersed in all the drama and hardship of the characters. I am a sucker for period novels and this one was a winner. Can't wait to read the next one. "

" Misleading description, I think - there was not much time spent fleshing out the upstairs characters and only a bit of interaction between them and "downstairs" Eve. Reminded me a lot of The Tea Rose, but without the epic feel. Pleasant enough sick read. Also dying for a pot pie of some sort. "

" Classic upstairs/downstairs, but a little more positive than a lot of other English historical novels. A little less tragic, a little more inspiring. Would be a great travel book! "

" Although I am a great fan of historical fiction I was not a fan of this book.Started reading with great enthusiasm and regretfully the further on I read the more of a chore I found it to be to finish. "

" Easy and undemanding read, ultimately lacking depth. There were too many cliches for my liking, and it was a bit too neat, but it was entertaining. I did like the fact that the ending veered a bit from the overall neatness and left some ends dangling, but that's to set up for a sequel. "

" Far too like Catherine Cookson for my taste. And as for the unbelievably rapid rise of Eve's business - well let's just say my disbelief could not be suspended that much. Definitely not for this Downton Abbey fan. "
