" The Muensters or the Addams Family set in Barcelona. Poor Andrea, an orphan, winds up living with her Grandma, etc., in the old homestead. A gothic horror story , but with beautiful writing and twists added to keep it from cliche, ensues. "

" Nada, by Carmen LaFloret, is a debut novel written in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil war. Though only in her 20's when she wrote it, La Floret is masterful in her craft and prose. The novel has potent characters and a compelling story. It is a first person narrative of a young orphaned woman who returns to Barcelona to live with her grandmother and other extended family. From the very first chapter, LaFloret establishes the intensity of her characters and the poverty of a once-thriving upper middle class family. I found it very compelling. "

" I really liked the book but I think the ending was disappointing; like the title, Nada me queda del libro. Not bad, not to read again. "
