Publisher Description

Major Rodger Y. Murphy should have died when his helicopter crashed off the coast of Mogadishu in November, 1993. Instead, he woke up in August, 2125, in a binary star system 152 light years from home. Without any memory of the otherworldly abductors who spirited them away in cold sleep, Murphy and 100 other “Lost Soldiers” have been retrieved and awakened by officers of the Consolidated Terran Republic.

Promising to return to the 55 Tauri B system after completing a distant mission, they leave the twentieth century castaways with a daunting objective: establish a base of operations on the main world, using local allies they have yet to recruit and enemy equipment they have yet to seize.

If that weren’t hard enough, 55 Tauri A, the system’s primary star, is rapidly approaching, and the technologically superior powers from that neighboring system always visit during the close approach … to raid, pillage, and cull the locals.

Worse, the Lost Soldiers left behind with Murphy were the losers and ne’er-do-wells deemed “sub-optimal” for inclusion on the rescue mission. Defiant and determined to live down that judgment, they have given themselves a different, more suitable label:

“Blends ruthless political pragmatism, advanced aliens with subtle and dangerous agendas, and human courage, determination, and sacrifice into an action-filled story that keeps readers up late. Very late, in my case. You should already have Chuck Gannon on your shelves.”

— David Weber, bestselling author of the Honor Harrington Series

Quotes

  • “Gannon’s whiz-bang…interstellar adventure delivers dozens of key characters, multiple theaters of operations, and various alien cultures…in this fascinating far-future universe.”

About the Authors

Charles E. Gannon is the author of science fiction and fantasy novels in numerous series, including the Caine Riordan novels, which have won the Compton Crook Award and been nominated for the Nebula Award. He is the coauthor with Eric Flint of 1636: The Papal Stakes and 1636: Commander Cantrell in the West Indies in the bestselling Ring of Fire series and coauthor with others of many other titles. He is a former professor and a member of SIGMA, the “SF think-tank,” which has advised various intelligence and defense agencies since the start of the millennium.

Griffin Barber spent his youth in four different countries, learning three languages while holding down jobs in marinas, bars, cafés, and, memorably, cold-calling casino guests. Finally settled in Northern California with a day job as a police officer in a major metropolitan department, he lives the good life with his wife and daughter. 1636: Mission to the Mughals, coauthored with Eric Flint, was his first novel; he has also written numerous short stories. Second Chance Angel is what he hopes to be the first of many collaborations with Kacey Ezell.

Kacey Ezell is an active duty USAF helicopter pilot. When not teaching young pilots to beat the air into submission, she writes sci-fi/fantasy/alt history. She was a Dragon Award finalist in 2018 and 2019 for her novels Minds of Men and The Worlds Asunder, and her stories have twice been featured in Baen Books’ Year’s Best Mil/Adventure SF compilation. In 2018, her story “Family Over Blood” won the 2018 Baen Reader’s Choice Award. She has books published by Baen, Chris Kennedy Publishing, and Blackstone Publishing. Mark Wandrey is located in rural Tennessee, and has been creating new worlds since he was old enough to write. After penning countless short stories, he realized that novels were his true calling and hasn’t looked back since. A lifetime of diverse jobs, extensive travels, and living in most areas of the country have uniquely equipped him with experiences to color his stories in ways many find engaging and thought-provoking.

Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman. As a young teenager, he became quite well known in Odense as a reciter of drama and as a singer. When he was fourteen, he set off for the capital, Copenhagen, determined to become a national success on the stage. He failed miserably, but made some influential friends in the capital who got him into school to remedy his lack of proper education. In 1829 his first book was published. After that, books came out at regular intervals. His stories began to be translated into English as early as 1846. Since then, numerous editions, and more recently Hollywood songs and Disney cartoons, have helped to ensure the continuing popularity of the stories in the English-speaking world.
