"I haven't read the book that precedes this one in the series, but didn't feel like I was missing anything. I think it was an engaging mystery for upper elem./middle school readers. I liked the way the invention and spread of the printing press was incorporated into the book."

" I really enjoyed this mystery. It has elements of the scary ghost stories that my elementary kids want, but not so much that parents will disapprove. I haven't been disappointed by an Avi book yet! "

" I would recommend this book to people who like mysteries. It is about a kid 1680s in Italy. He is trying to find out who killed his parents. "

" This was a good mystery set in the 1400s. The disappointment was how quickly the solution came for the mystery. Avi suggests that the characters know what's going on and have a solution but the reader isn't privy to that information before it is revealed. No chance to solve the mystery or come up with the plan because we don't have enough information. "
