Publisher Description

Vienna, 1902: a beautiful medium has been found shot dead, and Dr Max Liebermann, a young disciple of Sigmund Freud, is called upon to help his friend Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt investigate her death. The room containing the body has been locked from the inside, and a cryptic note suggests a malevolent supernatural power is at work. Using the new science of psychoanalysis, Liebermann probes the minds of the suspects in an attempt to unravel this bewildering crime.

"I must admit that I was a little sceptic about this novel.... Detective novels aren't my favorite genre, but I was surprised reading the first 100 pages, because I liked the book. Not because the "mystery part", but because I liked the descriptions of early psychoanalysis, good music, the picture about Vienna at the turn of the century... It was funny to read this kind of novel after so much time..."

" Despite the unimaginative/trite title this is good whodunit. (The original British title was Mortal Mischief which is just as bad and whey do they *DO* that?! i.e. change the title when it's published in the U.S.) Lots of "sense of place/time" and good characterization. Written by a practicing (English) clinical psychologist. The first in the Liebermann Papers series which is up to four titles so far. He has written two other novels and published nine non-fiction books on psychology prior to his foray into fiction. "

" So Mr. Tallis really needs to stop describing the Viennese pastries that his characters are eating, I drool. Other than that this is a tightly written well developed mystery and I am looking forward to many more of Max's adventures. "

" As someone who has a historical fiction novel (in her head if not on paper), I found the "historical" part of this novel a bit heavy-handed. A lot of Austrian pastry is eaten. "

" Enjoyable tale set in Vienna in the early 1900's. I thought the main theme moved along rather slowly but I really enjoyed the side stories. There were some loose ends that I wished had been tied up but I'll just have to use my own imagination! "
