Your mother hollers that you’re going to miss the bus. She can see it coming down the street. You don’t stop and hug her and tell her you love her. You don’t thank her for being a good, kind, patient mother. Of course not—you launch yourself down the stairs and make a run for the corner.

Only, if it’s the last time you’ll ever see your mother, you sort of start to wish you’d stopped and done those things. Maybe even missed the bus.

But the bus was barreling down our street, so I ran.

Fourteen kids, one superstore—a million things that go wrong.

In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world apart.

" This book was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Especially, since I don't really read a lot of book in the male first person. The author doesn't waste any time in the beginning; getting right to the action. I don't want to give much away but the ending completely threw me away (I had mixed feelings). I can not wait until Emmy Laybourne writes a sequel. This book can easily become the next "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games". Enjoy because I know did. "

" By the time I hit the third page I knew I would not be able to put this book down until I devoured the entire thing. Monument 14 is exciting from beginning to end, and surprised and horrified me repeatedly. The themes are a bit mature for some readers (teen sex, murder, loss of loved ones) but I suppose all of that was in The Hunger Games, too. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book in the series! "

" Wow, that was a crazy ride! But it didn't end! I have to wait for another book, right? ARGHH!! "
