In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world — as they know it — apart.

"This book was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Especially, since I don't really read a lot of book in the male first person. The author doesn't waste any time in the beginning; getting right to the action. I don't want to give much away but the ending completely threw me away (I had mixed feelings). I can not wait until Emmy Laybourne writes a sequel. This book can easily become the next "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games". Enjoy because I know did."

" By the time I hit the third page I knew I would not be able to put this book down until I devoured the entire thing. Monument 14 is exciting from beginning to end, and surprised and horrified me repeatedly. The themes are a bit mature for some readers (teen sex, murder, loss of loved ones) but I suppose all of that was in The Hunger Games, too. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book in the series! "

— Brenda, 12/3/2013" This book suprised me. I didn't think I was going to like it at all but I really enjoyed it. I found the characters interesting. I thought this would be exactly how a group of teenagers would act looking after young kids, making hard decisions. Overall a great read. "
— Rain, 11/17/2013" Too slow... "
— Natasha, 5/8/2013" Can't wait for the next one! "
— Gina, 3/23/2013" Like this book - wasn't so grim as other disaster/dystopian books can be. "
— Jan, 3/22/2013" Actually, this was more like a 2.5 for me (don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad by any stretch, but throughout the whole book I was borderline bored, and the story was, at time, overly predictable), but I'm going to give it a full 3 stars because I only saw the words 'perfect abs' once. "
— Raven, 2/10/2013" Oh my gosh - I hope there's another book!!! "
— Tracy, 12/5/2012" This is one of my new favorite books. It kept me interested and wanting to read more of it. A+ book for me. "
— Kosta, 11/30/2012" Arghhhhh???!! What an ending? Whoaa! No way! It should have a sequel! No way! "
