" When a friend recommended Mermaid, I was promised a gritty, dark, adult retelling of Anderson's tale. What I got was another sappy, overly romanticized young-adult novel. Not the worst of them, but certainly not enough to stand out from its many peers, Turgeon's retelling suffers heavily from forced, saccharine relationships -- specifically that of the mermaid and the princess -- and the overuse of words I'm sure the author had learned just before picking up her pen. If I never hear the word "ephemera" again it will be too soon, and I'll get back to you if I ever figure out why Turgeon thought it was a good idea to consistently describe the prince's eyes as being "the color of weeds".
