One of the most highly acclaimed and best-selling novels of 1991, Mariette in Ecstasy inspires even the most discriminating listener to some degree of reverence. This captivating story of faith and divine madness may move you to examine your own belief system. Since the tender age of four, Mariette Baptiste has had visions of her Savior. Now, at 17, she is entering the convent to dedicate her life to Him. At first, she is welcomed and admired. Then she begins to bleed from stigmata, and the villagers regard her as a saint. Emotions from the other Sisters of the Crucifixion range from admiration, to jealousy, to hatred. Readers will be stunned by the conclusion to Mariette's journey of faith. Recipient of an Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, Ron Hansen writes sensuous and compelling prose that is pure pleasure to listen to. Barbara Caruso's expressive voice beautifully conveys the rhythms reminiscent of haiku that the author so skillfully intersperses throughout.

" Maybe a little less; nothing much happens. A novice received the stigmata and there is the predictable set of reactions. The issue is left unresolved. I wish the author had spent more time on narrative and less on bunnies and flowers. He seemed to want to mix poetry and narrative, and achieved neither. "

" This book was crazy & gooood. "

" It was a very long time since I read this book (but I've read it twice), I think eleven or twelve years. I had something of a "confused/religious" phase when I happened to stumble across it. What I remember about this one is that it made a very, very deep impression on me. Must re-read it! (I read it in Swedish translation.) "

" I can't say I've liked Mr. Hansen's other work so much, but this book rings with a lyricism that is rare, so perhaps one novel of this caliber in a person's lifetime is enough. Some passages read like poetry, and there is an intimacy in the tone that draws the reader in. Please don't think you wouldn't want to read a book about nuns! Give it a chance and you'll likely be happy you did. "
