When Kennedy spoke of landing a man on the moon it seemed an impossible task, “We do this not because it is easy but because it is hard.” Man was spacebound and Kennedy’s goal was to achieve this on many levels; to show the Soviet Union that America was the preeminent superpower, to give a boost to the military industrial complex and to rally America to a common purpose and goal.

"Joyce is one of the finest authors/illustrators ever. This is a delightful, intriguing and beyond beautiful book. The only thing that stops me from giving it five stars, is that I love his previous works: The Leaf Men and Dinosaur Bob, even more. I want to keep my five star rating for the handful of books, like The Leaf Men and Dinosaur Bob, that say something profoundly true in an interesting way, accompanied by perfect illustrations. The illustrations of the Man in the Moon couldn't be better, but I found the story a tad saccharine."

" I didn't know that the movie, Rise of the Guardians, was based on a series of books by William Joyce. The Man in the Moon tells how the man in the moon got there! Beautiful illustrations. "
— Sherrie, 2/8/2014" Both of my boys loved this book. I can't even put my finger on why I wasn't crazy about it. I've always found William Joyce agreeable, but it is too much like somebody rambling off a bedtime story without a really clear direction of where he was taking us. Or, maybe it was more like a poor movie adaptation of a great story that I hadn't read yet. I must be missing something, but have no clue what it might be. It is a visually stunning book however. I will try the others in the planned series. "
— Elisabeth, 2/4/2014" A beautiful, magical story with wonderful illustrations. Read this to your children to keep the nightmares away. Joyce has outdone himself with the Guardians universe he has created. "
— Brittany, 2/2/2014" Beautiful story and illustrations. A good book for kids that have nightmares. "
— Maren, 2/2/2014" Great graphics! "
— Kaming_li, 1/16/2014" I love Joyce's artwork and storyline. This Is one of my favorites! "
— Melanie, 1/10/2014" I love William Joyce and his trippy, Steampunkish fantasies, but I was disappointed by MiM. The first in a planned series about the Guardians of Childhood, I didn't find the series premise that engaging. "
— Donalyn, 1/8/2014" Beautifully illustrated. "
— Sherrilyn, 1/4/2014" The illustrations were absolutely gorgeous. "
— Sarah, 12/29/2013" this will probably be the best book ever! "
— Aidan, 12/6/2013" The illustrations in this picture book are beautiful, but the story is strange. This is first in a series about the Guardians of Childhood. I do think kids would enjoy it. "
— Holly, 11/10/2013" Excellent bedtime story with kiddo, love the part about the balloons:) "
— Carrie, 5/8/2013" not only have i read this book not once but three times it is somerthing u will just fall in love with their is also a movie that has been made about this book. if you love a romance and a love story you will just love this book i know i didnt like any rimance novels but i just loved this one. "
— Michelle, 2/6/2013" Beautiful pictures to pore over, sweet bedtime story. Not for the youngest children "
— Kathyred, 11/3/2012" Gorgeous to read as a bedtime story. Joyce is incredible with his illustrations. Just stunning. "
— Carrie, 2/18/2012" I love this;it's precious and I really love the artwork!!!! "
— Rebecca, 5/31/2010" Another brilliantly illustrated and creative story. William Joyce never fails to deliver the awesome! I absolutely love the idea of this series. Can't wait to read more. "
— Jodie, 3/15/2010" The illustrations and the story not only engage the reader but encourage him or her, of any age, to imagine. If creativity is valued, this book should be on one's shelf. While this easily fits in an elementary school library, it's also useful as a picture book/writing prompt with later grades. "
— Carol, 1/18/2010" Lots of fun but it's no The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. "
