“Malcolm at Midnight has all the valor and adventure of The Tale of Despereaux with the hysterical wit of Frindle, which will keep kids both laughing and mesmerized. It’s got everything a young reader wants—mystery, cliff hangers, a fast pace, engaging characters, a satisfying story. Three cheers for the fresh and funny Malcolm!”

— Kathryn Erskine, National Book Award Winner

Quotes

  • “It’s my kind of yarn when a classroom pet nibbles on a social studies textbook but finds it too dry. And when an owl is unnerved by its food talking back. Malcolm the rat does indeed have valor and merit. So does his story.”

    — Richard Peck, Newbery Medalist
  • “Escapades, humor, and romance weave together in this madcap elementary school adventure…A first-rate debut.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Charlotte Parry’s slight, sweet voice is well matched to this story of Malcolm…In addition tot he assortment of animal characters, Parry coveys the comical nature of the gullible human teachers, and Malcolm’s friend, the keen, quick-thinking fifth grader. Parry’s timing with quick, short words also conveys excitement and adventure in this enticing story.”

    — AudioFile
  • “Malcolm is thoroughly likable, and the action sequences keep the pages turning.”

    — School Library Journal (starred review)
  • “Along with offering amusing rat’s-eye views of the daytime antics of the school’s ‘lankies’ (grown-ups) and ‘nutters’ (children)…this creature-feature leavens spookiness with healthy doses of whimsy.”

    — Booklist
  • “Readers will find lots of intrigue, excitement, and adventure that keep the plot and subplots moving at a quick pace…A great addition to a mystery collection.”

    — Children’s Literature
  • “A breathless, exciting tale of adventure, danger, betrayal, twists, and surprises…A rip-roaring tale; even rodent haters will have to like Malcolm.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
