Publisher Description

Dyamonde Daniel was a gem waiting to be discovered. Just ask her. With these opening lines, best-selling author Nikki Grimes introduces us to a new character kids are bound to love, a super smart third grader with wild-crazy hair and a can-do attitude.

The thing is, Dyamonde has just moved to a new school, and she's impatient for a best friend. Then Free shows up, and there's an even newer kid in class who might also need a friend. Unfortunately, Free doesn't want to be friends. In fact, he seems to be in a permanently bad mood. Dyamonde is determined to find out what's bothering him. And when Dyamonde Daniel decides to do something, it usually gets done!

A charming book about friendship and fitting in, delightfully read by the author, Make Way for Dyamond Daniel is surefire listening for the younger set.

"Nikki Grimes is fantastic once again. I think I heard that this might be the first of many Dyamonde Daniels books (although I can't remember) and I hope to learn more about her! This is a quick read and I loved the main character's confidence right away. "

" The first in a series about a girl new to a neighborhood with her parents freshly divorced trying to be happy and make friends. This wasn't fabulous but I liked it well enough to recommend. "

" Where's the rest of this book? This very short story (74 pages) felt incomplete. There really was not much of a story here, although I did feel that it was a good start. I felt like I was reading three or four chapters from a longer book. "

" A great early chapter book for kids. Dyamonde (pronounced Diamond) just moved to a new neighborhood with her mom. Her parents just got divorced and she is trying to deal with a new school and her dad not living with her. "

" If you've had to move to a new place or join a new group, you might be able to make some text-to-self connections. I like how each chapter has a different design on the pages! I'm going to put it in the 3rd grade section of the library. "

" THere was a new guy and he had just left all his friends in Detroit. The girl wanted to help him because he was mean to every one for no good reason. Dyamonde became his best friend. THis is the 2nd book i've read today...snowed in!! "

" children's fiction/beginner chapter books. I really liked Dyamonde's character, and wish that the kids would all read these instead of Junie B. So far the series hasn't taken off yet, though, at least not at my branch. "

" While Dyamonde may seem a little too mature to be believed, she is plenty likable. She is the new girl, and rather than dwell on her own problems she dwells instead on the new boy, who is too mean to everyone in class. "
