Most people who get promoted at work are pleased, but for Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel it comes with the knowledge that she is replacing her mentor who was stabbed in a bar fight. She barely has time to start doubting her abilities before a body is found in a locked house with seemingly no way in or out. DS Daniel not only has to prepare for a court date against the scourge of the force, legal expert Peter Hunt, she also has to hold off a journalist who seems to know more than she does about her case.

With a car that even junior officers joke about, an investigation with no leads, and a best mate whose love life is finally settling down, she has enough on her plate and that's before a second body turns up in identical circumstances to the first. How can a murderer get to victims in seemingly impossible situations and what, if anything, links the victims?

This Number one Kindle best-selling novel is the first in the Jessica Daniel series.

" I didn't enjoy this book- lacked pace and interest - not much else to say "

" This was an easy read, written simply with nothing deep or mystifying. The plot isn't intricate and the key characters are also not complex. However, I enjoyed the story and I also enjoyed the characters, especially Jessica. There was nothing there to keep me nailed to the chair turning the pages - which is not, in itself, a negative thing. But there was one thing that really turned me off. This story was obviously not written with an international readership in mind. I love reading books that offer me the flavor of different countries, but I find it very annoying when the local dialec overwhelms me. That was most definitely the case here. I'd really like to continue with Jessica, but I'm concerned I'll get put off by the same thing in Book 2. Sorry, mate, but if it weren't for that, I'd give it a go. "

" Gripped from the start. One of those books where you think you've worked it out from the off, but keep being led through the journey looking to prove or disprove your deductions. The how and whys tied up neatly at the end, apart from one minor character...which may appear in another book in the series (?). "

" Disappointed. I was persuaded, nagged in fact, to read this one and had missed it as being a free download so paid to download it, less than a pound so not a fortune. Sadly it didn't live up to the hype. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kasia | 1/6/2014

" The plot is simple but fine. The only thing that was disturbing me was the narration explaining everything as if the writer was treating readers as not smart enough to conclude by their own. "

" Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. A new author for me . Very enjoyable read with a believe able heroine in the form of detective constable Jessica Daniel. She doesn't have much of a life outside work but is very likeable. "

" Good British police procedural, realistic and I didn't work out the whodunnit until the very last. Enjoyable read, glad I have the next two in the series to look forward to. "

" This was my first crime novel that I read in ages. I was a little disappointed because the sample had me hooked and then it got a little boring, picked back up and then it was over. But overall I enjoyed it! Not surprised that it has done so well! "

" First in a series for DS Jessica Daniels. based in Manchester and very realistic. I enjoyed the book but sadly worked out the ending while still in the middle of the book so it spoiled it a bit. I liked it enough to want to try the next one in the series to see if I just got lucky with my guessing. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Lorna | 11/18/2012

" A relatively new crime writer. Female cop. Author tries a bit too hard to create a kick ass female character and the plot was a bit obvious but she sells very cheaply on kindle and I will give her another chance as it was enjoyable if a bit laboured at times. "
