Publisher Description

For detective Jessica Daniel, early-morning phone calls are never a good sign. Especially after her partner Harry Thomas’s controversial retirement left her with a promotion and more responsibility than she’d asked for. When the phone rings this time, it’s detective Jack Cole, calling to clue Jessica in on a body two-days dead. The crime scene unit turns up no evidence, but Jessica knows the key to solving this murder lies in what she can’t see — if the windows and doors are locked from the inside, how did the killer get in and out? Suddenly, reporter Garry Ashford writes a front-page story on the case, revealing details he shouldn’t know. When questioned, Garry says he has to protect his source’s anonymity — then a day later, another body surfaces. Does Garry know more than he’s telling? Jessica Daniel is prepared to unlock the terrifying clues.

"Gripped from the start. One of those books where you think you've worked it out from the off, but keep being led through the journey looking to prove or disprove your deductions. The how and whys tied up neatly at the end, apart from one minor character...which may appear in another book in the series (?)."

" I didn't enjoy this book- lacked pace and interest - not much else to say "

" This was an easy read, written simply with nothing deep or mystifying. The plot isn't intricate and the key characters are also not complex. However, I enjoyed the story and I also enjoyed the characters, especially Jessica. There was nothing there to keep me nailed to the chair turning the pages - which is not, in itself, a negative thing. But there was one thing that really turned me off. This story was obviously not written with an international readership in mind. I love reading books that offer me the flavor of different countries, but I find it very annoying when the local dialec overwhelms me. That was most definitely the case here. I'd really like to continue with Jessica, but I'm concerned I'll get put off by the same thing in Book 2. Sorry, mate, but if it weren't for that, I'd give it a go. "

" Disappointed. I was persuaded, nagged in fact, to read this one and had missed it as being a free download so paid to download it, less than a pound so not a fortune. Sadly it didn't live up to the hype. "

" The plot is simple but fine. The only thing that was disturbing me was the narration explaining everything as if the writer was treating readers as not smart enough to conclude by their own. "

" Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. A new author for me . Very enjoyable read with a believe able heroine in the form of detective constable Jessica Daniel. She doesn't have much of a life outside work but is very likeable. "

" This was my first crime novel that I read in ages. I was a little disappointed because the sample had me hooked and then it got a little boring, picked back up and then it was over. But overall I enjoyed it! Not surprised that it has done so well! "

" First in a series for DS Jessica Daniels. based in Manchester and very realistic. I enjoyed the book but sadly worked out the ending while still in the middle of the book so it spoiled it a bit. I liked it enough to want to try the next one in the series to see if I just got lucky with my guessing. "

" A relatively new crime writer. Female cop. Author tries a bit too hard to create a kick ass female character and the plot was a bit obvious but she sells very cheaply on kindle and I will give her another chance as it was enjoyable if a bit laboured at times. "
