"A book written in response to a friend's request, "You have something to say, . . . but you keep saying it to people who least need to hear it... What about us young, ambitious, secular men and women wondering what life is all about after all? Can you speak to us with the same conviction as you speak to those who share your tradition, your language and your vision? I would say yes, Fr. Nouwen was able to speak to these friends."

" A quick read. The book really didn't do much for me. The writer seems more emotional than logical in his thrust, so I didn't really identify with a lot of what he was saying. "

" read this on my flight from PHX to Philly today.. very much enjoyed it. Nouwen puts into words many of my deepest thoughts and at the end of this book, even perfectly hits on my fascination with the gift of dying well. ok. that might sound weird. but its really a good thought-provoking short book. " This book is simply written, not from the academic prowess of Henri Nouwen, which he certainly has, but from one broken human being to other real people of the everyday. It's really hard to state the profound in simple terms, but Henri Nouwen has done just that. It's an easy quick read that leaves a lot to think about. "

" Very good complements to each of the four major themes expressed in this work. A great light devotional book that expresses how to view existence in trying times. I would encourage everybody to at least skim this one, as the ideas here are good for anyone and everyone to keep in mind. "

" This was not the first of Nouwen's works that I have read, and it certainly won't be last. Life of the Beloved echoes a refrain that should be familiar to those who have been exposed to his other writings. While this book can be read in a matter of hours, I believe it has the potential to impact those who read it for a lifetime. The invitation to live as one of God's beloved children is one which we all need to hear. "

" Not fantastic. Nouwen is a liberal, and I knew that going in, so his definitions of election, beloved and so forth are univerally inclusivist. We're all elected, we are all the beloved, and so forth. The book is written to a agnostic Jew, so this sort of talk is profoundly unhelpful. "

About Henri J. M. Nouwen

Henri Nouwen (1932–1996) was ordained a Catholic priest in 1957. He obtained his doctorandus in psychology from Nijmegen University in the Netherlands and taught at Notre Dame, Yale, and Harvard. He experienced the monastic life with Trappist monks at the Abbey of the Genesee, lived among the poor in Latin America with the Maryknoll missioners, and was interested and active in numerous causes related to social justice. After a lifetime of seeking, he finally found his home in Canada as pastor of L’Arche Daybreak where people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers live together in community. He wrote more than forty books on spirituality and the spiritual life that have sold millions of copies. His vision of spirituality was broad and inclusive, and his compassion embraced all of humankind.
