Publisher Description

Now as famous on radio and audio as they are in print, the adventures of that irrepressible and ageless schoolboy William Brown have been delighting both young and old for decades. Perpetually scruffy, mud-stained, and mischievous, he is a lovable scamp whose pranks usually end in disaster, for his harassed elders at least. With friends Ginger, Douglas, and Henry (The Outlaws), and the angelic, lisping, thorn-in-his-side Violet Elizabeth Bott, William has rightly joined the literary, and radio, immortals.

This volume of Just William features the following stories:

  • The Christmas Truce
  • Only Just In Time
  • The Midnight Adventure of Miss Montague
  • William and the Musician
  • Williams Leads a Better Life
  • William and the Twins
  • William's Birthday
  • William and the Little Girl
  • The Outlaws and Cousin Percy
  • William and the Princess Goldilocks

  • "I've read just about all of the series, but this one can stand in for all of them. I read them when I was growing up (in the 60s) and they're utterly brilliant for kids and adults alike (I read one of the series 10 years ago). Maybe I liked it so much for two reasons - William was the mischevious kid I wanted to be, in charge of his own gang (The Outlaws); and I grew up in the countryside having similar adventures in brooks and streams and trees, although I was from a working class family and didn't have maids and so on. (Not that that matters). It got me into reading as well..."

" Richmal Crompton wrote these books for adults but, of course, children are their natural audience. Even so, they are still hilarious - intentionally and not so intentionally. I hesitate to cite the excerpt where William's elderly, puritan and virginal Aunt Jane escorts William the local fair and discovers the joys of the merry-go-round. The phrase "Aunt Jane rode on a giant cock" will endure with special resonance in my memory. "

" The sort of little brother that you could quite cheerfully strangle, William never does anything because he's malicious, he just doesn't think. As a result he gets into scrapes, embarasses various members of the family and made me chuckle. "

" I love this kind of book. It reminded me a lot of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', one of my favourite books of all time. While Cedric is an angel and William is always up to no good, they're both so fundamentally innocent and endearing. 'Just William' was really funny all the way through, mostly because of Crompton's perfect way of describing things. Her choice of words is spot-on and makes these stories hilarious. I felt genuinely carefree and happy while reading this book, which is a very rare thing for me indeed. I will definitely be reading more of William's adventures. "

" Loved these books as a kid, love them even more as an adult. When I was 11 I idolised William and now I'm in my 30's I find him hilarious! "

" Not-so-sweet William raises hell in a sleepy little English village in the years before the first world war rocked England. Coming from a time when food is plenty, sweets are delicious (and cheap) and children spent all day outdoors dreaming about pirates and robbers, William is an archetypal image of boyhood. He also happens to be head of a gang called the Outlaws and local disturber of the peace. Richmal Crompton infuses her characters with a lot of humour and wry observations on adolescence and adulthood courtsesy William's long suffering parents, siblings and neighbours. "

" Some of my favourite books. I wanted to ne William when I was a boy and they still take me back to childhood. Crompton was a writer of genius, though I still prefer the first dozen or so books as the later ones are not of the same quality. "
