Publisher Description

When Joanna Brady's daughter, Jenny, stumbles across the body of her high school principal, Debra Highsmith, in the desert, the Cochise County sheriff's personal and professional worlds collide. Though she's tried to protect her children from the dangers of the grown-up world, the search for justice leads straight to her own door and forces her to face the possibility that her beloved daughter may be less perfect than she seems.

Yet the deeper Joanna digs, the more complications she uncovers. It seems the quiet, upstanding principal had a hidden past, full of mysterious secrets she'd successfully kept buried for years. As the seasoned sheriff juggles professional constraints and personal demands, she finds herself walking a fine line between justice and family that has never been so blurred.

"Another well written story by one of my favorite authors. J. Brady is an authentic detective and someone I miss when the book ends. Jance's characters are so completely described that you feel like they are real people. The story is compelling and the book is hard to put down. I am usually torn between wanting to finish it and not wanting it to end! For anyone who is not familiar with Jance, her blog is revealing due to her willingness to share her life, both good and not so good aspects. I highly recommend it."

" I like Jance's books. The characters are complex and fallible and the story lines are always unique. The "who done it" aspect in this one was pretty easy to figure out. But, Jance threw in a little lagniappe, as they say in New Orleans, to make things more interesting. Although I like the Joanne Brady books, it's time for another J.P. Beaumont mystery. All in all, this was a good book - not spectacular, but a good read. "

" Joanna Brady is not my favorite of JA Jance's character's, but I do think she evolving into a more likable character. This book helped, too. Still, more JP Beaumont, please!!! "

" I enjoyed this police procedural with Sheriff Joanna Brady balancing police work and home life. Her coroner rivals her mother for being difficult, although I sometimes think Joanna is overly prickly with her mother. This story starts with Joanna's teenage daughter finding the dead body of the high school principal and the murder mystery begins. The clues were ample for me to figure out the whodunnit without too much difficulty but I still enjoyed the fact finding and the personal relationships. "

" This is another in the Brady series and, as usual, moves along well with plot, action and character growth. The only disconcerting aspect was the suddenly tacked on plot addition at the end of the novel. I almost felt as though it was added to make the novel long enough. "

" Sheriff Joanna with her mother (who is allowed to be more than a bitch in this book), her daughter Jenny (who is growing up), husband Butch and friends solve new and and old mysteries. Maybe a bit too much of a happy ending, but I liked it, and I like happy endings, but am worried about Junior. "
