"A crime mystery set in Iceland. In the beginning, I felt the thought processes of the main character were not well laid out, but as the story progressed, the reader and supporting characters are brought around to his way of reasoning. As detective stories go, this was pretty good, what I like best about these types of stories is the complex thought processes of the detectives. I wish the author would have let us into the mind of his main character a bit more, but all in all, worth the read."

— Boston Globe“Jar City stresses both the otherworldliness of this faraway country and how similar its denizens are to the rest of us...An excellent debut.”
— Baltimore Sun“[Erlendur is] a helluva detective.”
— Minneapolis Star-Tribune“There’s much to glean about the people of Iceland from this erudite and compelling story...Jar City taps into the melancholy of Scandinavian perspective and manages to be quite thrilling, too.”
— Rocky Mountain News“Fascinating...an original and puzzling mystery.”
— Sunday Times (London)“This careful, sparsely written book operates at a deeper level than most crime fiction: it conveys the sense of painful inevitability underlying the old stories that medieval Icelanders told through the long winter nights.”
— Independent (London)“The writing has a directness and deceptive simplicity reminiscent of Simenon...Here is a new voice that demands to be listened to!”
— Reginald Hill, author of Dialogues of the Dead“A powerful, psychologically acute procedural drama.”

— Kirkus Reviews" Enjoyed this. Another quick read and an interesting concept. "
— Clbplym, 2/15/2014" I didn't realize that I'd read book three in this series until I started it. I like the "odd couple" pairing of the detectives. The end was actually quite moving and I felt really gripped by the story. "
— Sarah, 2/14/2014" This book was a bit grim but the plot was interesting. Did it make a difference that it was set in Iceland? Not really, even though that's why I chose to read it. Not bad at all, though. "
— Arni, 2/1/2014" Read it in half a day! "
— Iñaki, 1/22/2014" Just finished this book, which was a recommendation from a friend, and cannot believe I've gone so long without reading this author. I am planning on reading all of his titles now, which is as good a recommendation as I can give. "
— Wayne, 1/18/2014" Excellent book. Intelligent, well plotted, and moving. "
— AC, 1/15/2014" This was a good read. My first book by this author. Will go back and read his others. I was interested and intrigued by "Jar City" and what it really means. This is my first Icelandic book. I enjoyed the mystery, and the characters. Held my interested throughout the book "
— Dee, 1/2/2014" I never read an Icelandic thriller before. It was really good, and the translation was very well done! And I learned a lot about Reykjavik and Icelandic culture at the same time. Good deal! "
— Joanie, 12/22/2013" The gray environs of Iceland make a fascinating and appropriate setting for this story of murder and lost dreams. "
— Letha, 12/13/2013" I couldn't put this down, even though I wouldn't have read it if I'd known that the death of a child was involved. I don't do those anymore. The small details, like the way Icelandic names work, were fascinating to me. I can't wait to read the second book in the series. "
— Kirsten, 12/7/2013" A fascinating look at the Icelandic culture through the lens of a compelling mystery. "
— Allison, 12/5/2013" This is a very good book. And, yes, it seems it turned out I love crime thrillers after all. "
— Sarah, 11/30/2013" first book I've read by this author. Enjoyed it. Would read another. "
— Diane, 7/14/2013" It's always exciting to start a new series. Looking forward to more! "
— Marie, 2/4/2013" Given to me by mama on Christmas 2010 "
— 'stina, 1/21/2013" Fairly standard police procedural - didn't learn that much about Iceland. "
— Se71, 9/5/2012" Very interesting-- both theme wise and character portrayal. Iceland is a dark and dismal place in this book, and our main character a sad and damaged man. I found the plot unwound in ways sometimes surprising but always intriguing. If you like mysteries, you'll love this one. "
— Jan, 6/28/2012" I am very interested in the characters in this series and I have an obsession going with Iceland! "
— Judi, 5/4/2012" Detective mystery set in Iceland. Not too suspenseful but interesting info about Iceland. "
— Rebekah, 2/11/2012" A dreary story in which the entire plot wraps around an extremely rare but heritable genetic mutation. Not a single person was happy, and there is little to admire in any of them. The book was, however, written/translated very nicely, and that matters. "
